Rat-Trap Car Project In TECH ED

Well, I have to construct a rat-trap and string based car. We built it. A few things weren't straight, but we thought it didn't really matter. We had to sand this peice of wood rubbing against our wheel. Then we had problems with our axels. We had to thread them ourselves. And the threader got stuck halfway on one of the axels so we lost 1/2 inch of threaded axel because it was stripped. Testing day was today. We don't even know if this thing runs. We got fourth. At first the rat trap didnt set off. So we wound the string by turning the axel. It went a whole 12' before stopping. Well, we got a 66% on it. We are allowed to retest after some work to it. I need some people to tell me how to modify my car further. Here is a picture of what we did. And everyone sort of copied but theirs worked.

    Any ideas?

I did this in like 7th grade. gg. Put straws through your frame, then put the axel through the straws making it turn easier, or something like that.

well, the big wheels are good. i'm sure you know that. big wheels go farther on the same turning... although are harder to get speed. the small/light cars travel further on momentum.

I definately did this in Physics 1, along with rubber band car, rubber band boat, and rubber band paper airplane. We also built catapults and trebuchets.

you want it to be as light as possible, big wheels, and make sure the string is wrapped as tight as possible. also make sure your car is sturdy and travels straight, otherwise you'll lose out on momentum AND distance.

Yeah, this was a project my freshman year in college for intro to engineering. We tried CDs, but those TOTALLY didn't work. The main thing you need is a gigantic lever arm.

Ok. Our car is about 20 inches long. I can extend the lever 4 more inches out and increase the string amount dramatically. I used the wood block to boost the spring power.

          About the cd's:

I know they dont work too good. They split apart and break easily. I am going to get my dad to make me 2 metal plate things.

I made our car as light as possible. I had a lot more wood on their before I simplified it.

Also, forgot to mention I got placed with an idiot for a partner. He didn't do jack ****. I told the teacher and he failed him. I still got full points except for the distance. The first time we tested it, the car stopped moving. The lever and rat trap bar just stopped because the axels were too tight and other reasons like how I built the car myself while everyone had a partner's help. So the asshat goes up and kicks it and I had to Re-glue everything he kicked off. Well. I will try some stuff and internetz how to make it better from there.

Well, my problem with the CDs was that they would slip on the ground. We made it pretty last-minute, so we changed them out for big, but slightly smaller, Knex wheels. In fact, most of the vehicle was made out of Knex.

Our car was only about a foot long, and we were able to get it to go nearly the twenty feet, but we didn't extend the lever arm at all, which was the most important part in making it go far.

Well, the problem there is we cannot use any commercially made material meant for wheels. No racing wheels, no knex wheels, lego, model, really any wheel. We had to make our own. This is why I am going to use metal plates and place tape around the edges to keep it from slipping some. My friend used metal plates with tape around it and it got around 75 feet. Our 100% was 60 feet. The one group got 108 feet. But they had teacher help do to their SPEDness.

I made one of these in...7th grade I think, and we used these plastic clear CD-like things (I don't know what they really were) and they slipped a ton, but that was assisted by a cut up balloon which was stretched around the circumference. It still wasn't that good, but it helped. At the end of the project, half of the class just stomped on their cars, breaking them entirely. The teacher was wicked pissed

Ok. Well, we can start going down during study halls. But now we have to do CAD. Everyone is like, "WTF DO I DOOO!". We have been doing it for 2 days and I have 3 out of six drawings done. I get alot of free time. Like the rest of the year.
