What kind of lame maneuver is this by Microsoft?

If anyone has their Windows Updates set to automatic and didn't even see what they installed, you better see if you can uninstall it.

The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification notifies you if your copy of Windows is not genuine. If your system is found to be non-genuine, the tool will help you obtain a licensed copy of Windows.

Basically: "We're on the hunt for people who installed their friend's copy of XP and we'll probably make it so both of you can't use it until you pay for a real version suckers."

I have a totally legitimate copy and I still would never install this crap. It's like getting Service Pack 2 times a thousand in terms of Microsoft checking up on you and limiting what you can do.

My update happened this morning; I didn't even get a notification at 4:00 last night.

I bet you can uninstall it though. Or at least do a System Restore.

I don't care enough... my copy is legit. Therefore, they can put whatever little slimy tendrils into my computer they want.

Now if they started looking at licenses for their software... that would be a different story.

Mine's legit, so I really don't care

However, it is pretty ****ed up though... if this is the only way that Microsoft can see if your copy is legit (other than, uh, you know... online verification when you install the thing?) then that's pretty sad.

I find it ridiculously disgusting that they go this far to fuck with the people who pirated it EVEN THOUGH they're a gigantic multi-billion dollar monopoly and it doesn't exactly significantly hurt them in the first place.

They waste money and resources on relatively unimportant and unstoppable matters.

They tried this last year. To make it so XP only updates if you're using a Genuine XP product. The workaround was posted within 24 hours. So their weeks / months of effort to make this "Genuine XP Product checker" was ruined in under 24 hours.

Good thing I disabled all auto-updates and never installed SP2. It's the only reason why my computer has lasted this long.

Some of the updates are worthwhile. Most aren't.

I still have SP1 and such. With all the crap Microsoft is doing these days, I'm considering switching to Mac or Linux.

They're doing this with all of their **** I guess. They put a bunch of security features on Microsoft Office stuff. You can only download it on 2 computers, and to download it on the second you need a bunch of security codes from the 1st one.

Who would have theirs set to automatic? i havnt clicked that notification in 5 years and i dont plan on it. i just have service pack 1.
