This movie was made using an emulator with savestates and slowdown. It's meant to show the game pushed to its limits.

Notes:

Super fast bouncing around. Completed without collecting any emeralds, with Sonic and Tails (controlled indirectly by mimicking Sonic's movements).

This movie:

- No death - Takes damage to save time - Aims for fastest time - Ignores semi-important goals in the game - Ignores delays caused by bonus effects - Abuses programming errors in the game.

called a TAS, a tool-assisted speedrun. AKA, not real. As you said, its slowed down on an emulator to 1/32nd speed and recorded frame by frame. TAS' are a skidmark on real speedrunning, IMO.

Its impressive, but for different reasons from a real speed run.

Quite true. The merits of each can't really be compared, since they are completely seperate things.

That being said, I generally find tool-assisted runs far more entertaining to watch than real speed runs.

Shame he/she didnt get the emeralds though, I loved the doomsday level at the end. Sonic was all like WHAATAAA with the pointing and that in super sonic form.

A tool-assisted run is more impressive than an actual speedrun because:

A. It looks better.
&
B. It takes far more time, effort, and skill to make. Do you know how many times these guys play the games, perfecting their runs? Many of the runs on bisqwit's site have replay counts in the tens of thousands. Compare that to the paltry amount of times speed runners play their games.

I guess it is a matter of opinion Moogy. I, personally, much prefer speed runs. I want to see what the best humans can do normally... not what the best guys can figure out with save states and 1/32nd speed. Many of those tricks are near impossible or impossible to do in a real run. ALTHOUGH, many speed runners get some tips/tricks from TAS' of the same game.

I want to see what real people can do, not what the limit of the game is. I will agree that TAS' look better, and they should. But it is just not real.

I agree with Tassel. Even though with TAS its not easy I would be more impressed with speed runs. Dont get me wrong, I couldn't do what these guys are doing. It is impressive. Although i figure TAS is cheating in a way.

best site on the net for all around speedrunning: www.speeddemosarchive.com if you're looking for specific games, other sites are probably better, but SDA has the files for many popular games that are hosted elsewhere (like MK64, SSBM, Goldeneye... hmm, al N64 games) in addition to ~200 other games. It is also the home of Quake Done Quick, the home of EVERYTHING Quake related.

Saying that regular speedruns are more impressive than TAS's because they're done all at once is like saying that Kenny G is more impressive than Richard D. James (rofl) because Kenny G plays all his music live on contemporary instruments.

It's really, really goddamn shallow and stupid.
