Yes, I know this involves a videogame, BUT this also involves a well known figure.

Here's what the article focuses on:

"Just because it is rated mature doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it for your kids," 50 Cent told Reuters yesterday. "Play the game and explain to them what they are playing."

So, any thoughts on what 50 Cent said?

He has a point. Game ratings are merely recommendations on the appropriateness for an age group. Even when using the ratings, the buyer should execute judgment when buyinh a game.

HOWEVER. As the author of this article points out, 50 Cent tends to credit his success on marketing. So, does he really mean what he said? Maybe, maybe not. He could really believe that it is up to the parent to decide. And besides, kids will encounter these sort of things eventually. However, maybe the only reason he said it was to egg parents on to buy a copy of his game for his kids.

Apologies. I didn't see a topic for this made in the last couple of days, yet this was a pretty good article.

Eventhough it's over 2 days old, it's pretty interesting, no?
In a way, 50 Cent is acting like a politician. He says something with an ambiguious motive, like politicians who make promises to their voters. A politician may be doing something good for the people, but he probably does the deed just to gain connections and fame. In this case, 50 Cent says something that may counter the views of many politicians and possibly defend the gamer's views of parental discretion, yet you'd wonder if he really meant what he said, or he just wants to sell copies, copies, and even more copies.

Unfortunately, people gave me Harry Potter videogames as a gift, and I currently have 3 Next one I get I'm returning, I swear. Maybe I should give my relatives and Santa a long nice letter on how they should check the freaking reviews before they get me cruddy products.

Of course he's going to coach everyone to buy HIS violent ass video game... Money. It's all about the money. Sad really, to influence a parent to teach a kid a life of drugs and guns. What's the world coming too??

1) The fact that 50 has his own video game proves that he's in it all for the money. He has a movie, a game, lots of records, and he even says straight out that he's trying to "Get Rich or Die Trying." Seriously.
2) I read that the game isn't all that bad. Basically just your standard 3rd person shooter, but without the standard flaws that always happen when it's made about a famous person/movie/thing.
3) If you are a fan of 50 Cent's music, the game is a must-have. There are like, 3 CDs of unlockable music in the game, including a lot of stuff that is unreleased. If I liked 50 (and I don't, I think he's a wannabe gangsta that isn't even that great of a rapper, and if he was a true OG he'd be shooting people 9 times, not getting shot 9 times) I would definitely get the game, if nothing else just for the music.

5) As for what 50 said, I personally kind of agree. Ratings really aren't the end-all be-all decision on who should and shouldn't use/play/view something. Ratings are there as a guide for parents to quickly know whether or not the content should raise concern. When I become a parent, I won't worry if my kids see G or PG movies at all. PG-13 I may care a little bit, at least until the kid is around 9-10 and I know they've already been exposed to things. I definitely won't let my kids watch R-rated movies until whatever makes it rated R has been discussed with them. If I haven't talked to my kids about sex, I don't want their first conception of sexual activity to be in a movie. The unrealistic portrayal they would see may give them a false understanding. Only when I know they really understand a concept will I let them see it in a movie. Like, I will, very early on, tell my kids about violence, when it is okay, and when it is just not acceptable. They will know that violent media is just play and that none of it should ever be done actually. I will let my kids watch movies rated R for violence alone very early, since I will have taught my kids to not be violent.

I'm not sure what all is in 50's game, but if it's just violence, I wouldn't care if an underage kid of mine played it. I'd of course monitor them and make sure they didn't take it too seriously, though.

I don't think 50 has a very good point. All his game is about his killing people, drugs and other crap that he sings about. If I was a parent, I would not want to buy this game or any of his music for say a 10 year old

On the topic of Rated R content in the hands of kids, I remember hearing my aunt giving her 12 and 10 year old boys Playboy magazines.

Seriously, and she isn't a dumbass, either.

She did it so those two understood that they didn't have to hide anything from her, and from what I heard, it worked.

Too bad my mom won't use that approach LOL :P



*Edit* In other news, 50 Cent: Bulletproof is now the lowest rated game to ever be "Today's #1 Game" on Gamespot.com. Happened a few days ago. Now it's that new Prince of Persia game
