    Scholarship to Japan

So, the company I studied abroad through is supporting this scholarship to Japan. For an academic school year. At a Japanese high school (could be anywhere in japan, just depends on host families). For free. About a $10,000 value.

Now I know you are thinking oh my god awesome I'm gonna go sign up now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well hold your horses, buddy.

This is for high school students. I applied for this scholarship last year, but couldn't get it because I would have been 19 for the majority of my time in Japan (would have left about 2 months ago?). That was really lame. Make sure you are not in that category.

Due date! December 1st! If you are serious, get your stuff in right away! It is possible to do it within a month. You could do it over the weekend (it would probably take all weekend).

Can't speak Japanese? It says no previous language experience required, but if you can't speak Japanese, I strongly recommend you DO NOT GO. It will be a horrible experience. How much attention do kids at your school who can't speak English get? Not a whole lot. Of course people will be interested in you when you first get there, but the novelty will wear off fast and you'll be stuck with weirdos or language leeches.

Japan is a messed up country. In many aspects. Your American way of thinking is a no go over there. You do not want to stand out. Be assimilated or get out. I can't explain a lot of the stuff to you guys because you just won't get it. It would also take me hours and hours to do.

PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE ANIME IN JAPAN. THERE ARE NO ROBOTS. NO ULTRAMAN. NO HOT GIRLS WAITING TO POUNCE ON YOUR FOREIGN PENIS. NONE OF THAT. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN JAPAN BECAUSE OF ANIME, J-POP YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND, VIDEO GAMES OR WOMEN, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT EVEN ATTEMPT TO FILL THIS FORM OUT. DON'T EVEN LOOK AT IT. IT'S NOT FOR YOU.

Things that will help you win 1 of the 10 scholarships they are giving out: Writing skills. You have to write some essay stuff. Being able to write well is a huge, huge plus. Good grades and an interest in your own academic achievement. The ability to speak and write Japanese. Obvious reasons for that one.

With that said, I present you with the link.

I shouldn't be doing this, but I would really love to see more Americans go abroad and see the world. I am tired of the racist, closed-minded individuals here. This program has my approval, because I didn't die or anything while I was over there.

One last warning. Don't get your hopes up about Japanese food. Not even Rambo would eat some of it.

Questions? Concerns? Feel free to ask.

Finalists are selected based on merit, cultural interest, and commitment to strengthening future U.S.-Japan relations. Applying is simple, but to be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen, national, and/or permanent resident, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, and be between the ages of 15 and 18.
      Damn.

Tokzic: you aren't a permanent resident? It said "US Citizen, National, and/or Permanent Resident." aka... you don't HAVE to be a citizen, just that you have whatever shit you need to be a full resident alien, or whatever the term is. Green card or something.

While I would be willing to learn what it's like to be in Japan, and I'm willing to let go of anime, robots, and video games to learn what it's like in Japan, I'm pretty sure I would stand out like a sore thumb. Plus, I may not even like it. Also plus, I can't speak Japanese.

He lives in Canada, so I don't think he qualifies as a Resident Alien or anything else.

Heh, love this part. Considering I'm 100% Japanese and eat Japanese food everyday. Some of our stuff is pretty volatile.

Plus, even if you do enjoy Japanese food, you'll get tired of how it all starts to taste the same. Really, if it isnt soy-based it's curry. Oh, how I miss natto. Sike.

Man, I wish I were still in high school. I would love to go back to Japan. Really, it is an awesome experience.

                          Also, about Varia's comment:
Your American way of thinking is a no go over there.
True, however, just keep in mind, you are an American. You are the cock of the walk. Don't feel bad if you do something wrong because...you're a f*cking American! If someone gets bad at you for wearing your shoes indoors, or pointing at someone with your chopsticks or whatever, just explain to them in a thick American accent: "boooku wa Amerikajin desuuu yoooo!" You dont even have to be american! You just have to be white. Just try not to piss off any Nationalists...they'll yell at you from the top of their jet-black colored vans and wave huge Japanese flags in your face.

PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE ANIME IN JAPAN.
Not entirely true. My host-sister's 12 year old brother loved Anime. If you love anime, just hang around elementary school students...you'll have a ball talking about Bleach and One Piece all day....and riding unicycles for recess.

Varia, did you happen to go to an elementary school while you were staying there, and if so did they ride unicycles for recess?

It sounds great, id love to try going but one, i dont know Japenese, and two my school doesnt teach Japenese. The only languages we have here are Spanish, French, and Latin. And the only ones that we actually have teachers for is Spanish. You have to take the French and Latin courses online which is hard as hell seeing as how you could email your teacher a question and you might get a responce in 2 weeks or so..
                            You'll never walk alone.
