First off, my download is really low, like 80.

My upload is even worse, its 8kb or so.

I'm not sure what to do or what to provide to get someone to help, but augh it pisses me off that DSL sucks this much.

So yeah, tell me what to provide and then maybe this can be a lot easier. I'm computer retarded.

I use Firefox, sometimes MSN. Firefox with the add-on you posted called Firesomething.

P2P: I used Torrents and Soulseek.

It's very possible your ISP throttles your connection.

For P2P clients, use a port between 49152-65535 (inclusive). They are not assigned to any other programs or applications, so you won't have bandwidth conflicts, and transfer speeds are not bottlenecked like some ports normally are by ISPs. ISPs usually bottleneck standard P2P ports, such as 6881-6889 an other various one in that ballpark. So, if you just use the unassigned ones, your P2P should be fine. I'll look into the possible browser solutions later.

EDIT: This is all assuming, of course, that LDs suggestion is incorrect.

I didn't suggest a solution, but rather suggested a possible reason for low speeds. I know that my ISP throtals my up speed at 50kbps for P2P, yet across port 80 (uploading via a webform) I get about 3MBit/sec

my college network is lame like that... absolutely destroys my bt speed. like I get 1.2 kb/s max on that. Also aim transfers only go at max of 15 kb/s. But a direct download will go at 2 Mb/s or whatever.

The connection through the box (literally your DSL modem) to your wall shouldn't be an issue at all. That's what's making your connection work in the first place... unless you're using wireless?

Your ISP could be throttling your connection for P2P. But, if it is doing it by port rather than by connection type, changing your ports should fix everything. Just see if using the ones I suggested makes a difference. Also, you can use a proxy in Firefox and change the ports. It's in the connection settings, which is found on the general tab in options under the tools menu. That may make a difference. You're on your own for setting one up, though.

One last thing: A lot of the speeds of uploads and downloads you have are based more heavily upon the source and your peers rather than your own connection most of the time. If the server that distributes files has a limit on it, download speeds will be slow. I'm not too sure about uploading, but the case may be the same there, too. Also, if you're doing a lot of uploads or downloads at the same time, you're eating up almost all your bandwidth, and everything will become slow.

A port is basically your "window" to the internet; the place where your computer makes incoming and outgoing connections. It's the connections your computer makes internally, and has nothing to do with the way your computer physically connects to the internet. This includes anything from web browsing to P2P downloading and uploading. There's really a lot more to it, but that's not important right now. Their numbers range from 0 to 65535. For many ISPs, certain ports are bottlenecked or throttled to prevent excessive speeds, which is usually the case with P2P, which are usually defaulted at 6881-6889, or thereabouts. To get around that, you have to change your port settings for your P2P client. Not all P2P clients allow changing the port, but I know BitTorrent does. On the generic client, you just have to go to your settings, and on the network tab, change your port. As I said before, 49152-65535 are the best choices. And, if my explanations aren't working for you, search for a crash course on ports somewhere.

When it comes to web browsing, I'm not sure that can be changed. You may be able to use a proxy, but I'm not sure if that would even change anything. The ability to change a port through the proxy may make a difference, though. I don't know too much about proxies myself; I'm not even sure if it'll make much of a difference. You'll have to look up a tutorial. If it can help, use http://stayinvisible.com to find proxies.

I can't pay for internet since like it's my parents.

And then they'll go into a fit about I can't get what I want.

Which is funny because I havent asked for anything since Juneish.
