    Sleep Deprivation

So, recently in social science we took a little quiz on sleep deprivation that prved our whole class was sleep deprived, and at the time, I was like rofl yeah right. But recently, that test seems a lot more realistic. I'm getting really tired recently, it is icredibly hard to wake up0, and I am struggling to keep awake all day, I want to fall asleep right after school, but I just cant.

I dunno what my problem is, my mom refuses to believe I have one, but I have a ton of trouble falling asleep. I just lay there like an hour trying to fall asleep, I would love to go to sleep an hour earlier, but I don't have the time.

Anyone else know how I feel? I'm going shower to see if that will help at all.

    RE: Sleep Deprivation

Our entire society is sleep-deprived. Ignore your teacher.

Why do you think coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the country?

And just for a personal touch, whether I sleep 6 hours or 16 hours does not matter to my body. I'll still feel groggy when I get up.

My teacher's test was so ironic, it first said we were sleep deprived, and then it said a lot of it was school's fault.

I thought that was, like I said, ironic.

But I'm starting to have trouble doing anything :<

No matter how hard I try, I just can't get tired unless I'm awake for like 15 hours plus. I wake up at 6 - 6:30 AM everyday for school, and I can't get tired until midnight that night. I fall asleep at like Midnight - 1:30 AM.

I never get tired even with my lack of good sleep hours.

That I have never thought about and is something I should consider.
For me it's different. I have a fixed cycle of being fully awake for a full ten to twelve hours before actually wanting to pass out.
In some situations, I can actually screw my sleeping schedule up. I will be up late at night/all night, or awake during "normal" daytime hours.
But RARELY, I can sleep a full twenty-four hours and feel so much better.
And, ask your teacher if they got this because I would love to check it out

I don't know, if you arn't tired, why don't you try doing more during the day to make you tired? I'm not going to assume anyone here is lazy, but a lot of people are XD

That way you can go to bed earlier, or something. I don't know, but I know personally if I don't get atleast 8 hours sleep my performance is much less than if I do. I perform best on 10 hours, so I make sure I get 9-10 every night. I wouldn't say I'm deprived, since I go out of my way to make sure I get a lot of sleep most nights. Doing something in the morning or during the day helps your mind stay awake too. Get a good breakfast, and then do something to wake you up. I like to play the piano. Being stuck in a class kind of sucks the life out of you though.

              RE: Sleep Deprivation

I'd say that i'm most likely sleep deprived, but thats my fault. Over the summer, with lots of activity, I would function great with 6-8 hours of sleep. Now with soccer and school, I find myself needing 8-10 hours a night and I'm having trouble making time for it. Almost seems as if school makes people sleep deprived, but its more likely the acitivities (sp) around school that are doing it. If it got to the point where I couldn't function normally, then I would change something, but until that point I just figure, hey - everyone else is sleep deprived too.

How refreshed you feel has less to do with how many hours you sleep, but during which stage of your sleep cycle you awaken. We went over it in a class I took beginning of senior year, but like, you know the how your sleep goes in cycles, right? If you awaken right at the end of a complete cycle, you'll feel refreshed, but if you awaken during the middle of partly into the start of a new one, you will still feel groggy. I can't remember how many hours cycles usually take, but I think it's like, 8. Assuming that's right, you wake up more refreshed and less tired if you sleep for 8 hours than if you sleep for 9.

PS: I never get groggy as long as I'm doing something. When I first wake up, I just kinda walk around in circles looking for stuff to do so I don't wander back to the bed and sit down then fall asleep. I've stayed up for a long time before, but eventually I always sit down or get bored and decide sleep is the only thing left to do.
So I've gone completely slack-ass and haven't done any work on creating games. =(

In less-depressing news, I got a job for an online business (which sells non-electronic games, of all things!) which has taught me a lot about marketing online and all that jazz.

I think most of us on FFR is sleep deprived, whether it be because of activities done in the day, or procrastination (which is the number 1 reason for me). As for me, generally during half of the day I often feel only half-awake. I don't absorb material as much. And yeah, after school, I want to take a nap, but I just can't.

Today i fell asleep in lunch, so i was all awake and stuff for orchestra.

I still feel very tired during the day, when the teacher talks and i try to listen, it's like she/he is singing a song to make me fall asleep.

I went to sleep late last night because of the tuns of homework i didn't finish, and i couldn't be alert/fresh in the early morning/afternoon.

Now i am too lazy to study for tests because i am too tired.

Yeah, I can fall asleep in the car if I feel like it (I get driven to/from school, beacuse I'd have to cross a couple of highways if I walked or took the bus). It's nice.

I am good at falling asleep.

I can't sleep past 8:00 AM, 8:30 tops, whether I go to bed at 11 PM or 3 AM. During the school year I get about 7 hours of sleep a night. One thing I've wake me up so I don't feel so tired at school, is wake up 45 minutes before I have to get up, and program. It takes about 3 minutes for me to get adjusted to the bright lights, and about an hour later, I don't feel groggy at all.

I get four or five hours of sleep a night, TOPS. I can get no sleep at all and still feel fine for at least a day or two.

You people are wimps. You don't know true insomnia like some of my friends do, who will stay awake for days, up to weeks at a time without sleeping. I'm totally serious.

On a side note, if you really can't get to sleep, an anti-anxiety medication will usually work better than a sleeping pill. Sleeping pills just make you drowsy and unconscious, the problem with true insomnia is a lack of REM sleep, which recharges your brain. Anti-anxiety meds will usually relax your brain enough for that to happen. Believe me, you've never had a good night's sleep until you've had a night of Xanax-induced sleep.

Anti, I can't even imagine how people can live with that, IF I have any insomnia at all, it is incredibly mild, so I jsut felt like making this topic, because nobody where I live seems to get how sleep deprivation works, I mean, when this started last year I had said I keep losing another hour of sleep at least, and then he was like, no, lack of sleep doesn't roll over.

What pisses me off the most about my problem with falling alseep is that I feel so tired, and just about to fall asleep, and then the moment I lie down, I am wide awake again.
