    6:04 PM in Rome

The bells of the Sistine Chapel rang, signaling the election of a new pope. I just happened to be watching the news when this happened, and there was about ten minutes of downtime between the white smoke (which started off looking gray) and the bells.

Obviously, as of now they have not announced who the new pope will be yet...

Joseph Ratzinger of Germany, Pope Benedict XVI.

They're going to explain why he picked that name soon.
I watched clouds awobbly from the floor o' that kayak. Souls cross ages like clouds cross skies, an' tho' a cloud's shape nor hue nor size don't stay the same, it's still a cloud an' so is a soul. Who can say where the cloud's blowed from or who the soul'll be 'morrow? Only Sonmi the east an' the west an' the compass an' the atlas, yay, only the atlas o' clouds.

Apparently after John Paul's active rule the church wants a wallflower to settle things down for a bit.

Apparently he's extremely conservative, like John Paul was. Which means against birth control, abortions and all that other stuff.

We ended up watching it all day 6th hour, which was nice, didn't have to do any work

                Eggs benedict are my favorite.

                He'll be a good pope.

"...together with John Paul, our Pope, and [name], our bishop..." just seems to flow better than "with Benedict, our Pope..."

And uh-oh, a round-faced Pope following a round-faced Pope?! Yes, there are some silly superstitions about regarding papal succession.

I would be EXTREMELY surprised (and quite disheartened) if any member of the clergy, especially a pope, was not against birth control and abortions.

I hate to go off topic like this, and especially something religion related, but I don't understand why most popes are against the birth control and abortions bit, is it because of them being Catholic?

I'm sorry if this seems like a silly question to some of you but I'm not really educated on my religions.

Yes. As I understand, Catholics do not condone the use of birth control and CERTAINLY do not condone abortion.

So, today, the other girl in my touring company got a text message about the new pope, and who he was, and said, "German? I was SURE they'd elect another Italian or a Latin American..." To which I replied, "John Paul II was POLISH, not Italian.." And she just looked at me funny.

                      Sigh.

HAHA! Sorry, man, I'm not making fun of you by laughing, but I found that statement extremely hilarious.

And yes, Catholicism has this thing against killing and about the sanctity of sex. It's not really something to be argued, either.

                        EDIT: Erm, bad sentence structure.

VATICAN CITY - Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany, a hard-line guardian of conservative doctrine, was elected the new pope Tuesday evening in the first conclave of the new millennium. He chose the name Pope Benedict XVI and called himself “a simple, humble worker.”

Ratzinger, the first German pope since the 11th century, emerged onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where he waved to a wildly cheering crowd of tens of thousands and gave his first blessing as the church's 265th pope. Other cardinals clad in their crimson robes came out on other balconies to watch him.

“Dear brothers and sisters, after the great Pope John Paul II, the cardinals have elected me — a simple, humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord,” he said. “I entrust myself to your prayers,” the pope said.

'I entrust myself to your prayers,' he tells crowd

Oh God, he is even more uglier then the first pope... No hard feelings

I got a text message at around 12:30 saying the bells were ringing for the new election of the pope. I don't think it was 6:04.
