    Remove vocals from songs?

I'm not even sure if something like this exists... But I'm wondering if anyone knows of a program that can take any song (or if not any, at least modern ones, maybe they're recorded differently), and create a copy of it without the vocals. I would search download.com for something like this but I wouldn't know what to type to start looking even. Anyway if anyone knows or can at least point me in the right direction that would be appriciated, thanks.

Curious... what for? Plus I've never heard/imaged of any program that did that.

Your only hope would be using an EQ to try to manual dim the vocals.

Tried it Jewpin, It sounds horrible. But yeah, I have imagined having something like that, but it would have to have a voiceprint of the singer to get the words out, so yeah, doesn't exist to my knowledge.

According to the FAQ for Audacity (a sound editing program http://audacity.sourceforge.net/):

"2. Can I remove the vocals from a recording?

With some stereo recordings, it is possible to remove the vocals because of the way in which the recording was mixed at the studio. Often, the vocals are placed in the exact center of the recording, while all other instruments are slightly off-center. If you subtract the right channel from the left channel, the vocals get completely canceled out, leaving only the other instruments.

This only works on some recordings!

To attempt this in Audacity, import a stereo recording, then click on the track pop-up menu (the little down-arrow next to the name of the track) and select "Split Stereo Track". Now select the lower track (the right channel) and use the "Invert" effect (from the Effect menu). Finally, use the track pop-up menus to make both channels Mono channels, and then mix them together using Quick Mix. If you're lucky, the vocals will be gone. "

As stated, it doesn't work on all recordings, and it will make the result sound rather strange. If it does work, some of the vocals may be faintly audible still, and still others may be left in completely.

In my own experience, I'd say the results were acceptable maybe 50% of the time.

A good way to explain this is to think of a song you hear on a cd as a cake, and the instrument tracks as ingredients. You can't take out the eggs once it is baked, and you can't take just take a part out once it has been mixed down.

Looks for instrumental of the song. That's all you can do.

Actually, the Sega Saturn had an option to do that on the CD player.
It didn't work very well, but it was pretty cool.

                  True story.

in response to profplum50 - i tried doing that with candy (vocal mix) and i got some music that, if i added some hardcore beats and a nice kick, would make a great candy raving tune.

but yea i dont think its possible to rip straight layers. look for acapellas (sp?) i guess.

A cappella means no instruments, basically.
So that would be the exact opposite of what he wants.

Unless he layers the a cappella onto of the original and works it so it creates a negative effect....it could work.

I used to have Audacity on my old computer, like ProfPlum said up there ^. I remember i was at my aunt's house and my cousin wanted to take the lyrics out of "Work It" and replace it with some stupid things by him and my sister. It worked with audacity. I never used it, but it could work.
