MPEG Audio Layer 3.
It's a (rather lossy) compression scheme, like LD said.
OGG provides the best lossy compression for audio files, and FLAC the best lossless compression.Comment

Mp3s are in place right now because had the technology not been invented all audio files would be about 10mb / minutes. This is about the size of your averave WAV file.
WAV files are still in place, however. Whenever you burn an audio CD, the program you use must first convert all the Mp3 files to WAV format and temporarily store them in a folder while it burns to the CD.
By the way, anybody heard any progress on the Mp4 file format, or is that just a myth?

I'm pretty certain MP4/DivX = easier to make/more .. that thing with uh.. oh yea,.. standardized..Originally posted by chardishMPEG = Motion Picture Experts Group, the group that developed the technology.
MP2 is really far superior, and in the days of high-speed connections, I have no idea why people don't use it.Comment
