Last time I checked www.newegg.com, they had a Radeon 9800 Pro for only $223 or so. That's a hell of a deal, and possibly one of the best price/quality deals you will find on the internet.
If you want the biggest "My computer is etter than yours for this part alone" video cards out there, sheel out a good $700 or so for a Radoen x800.

I run a GeForce3 Ti200.
GeForce 4's are good and relatively inexpensive.
But the Radeon x800 is the best.
Signature subject to change.

Ugh, disregard eveything said so far in this thread. These people don't know anything.
First order of business. For current gen cards, ATI > Nvidia. Those are really the only two major companies. For current gen cards, ATI is generally cheaper, faster, and has better Direct X 9.0 support.
ATI:
Low end: Radeon 9200 PRO 128 Mb
Mid-range: Radeon 9600 XT 128 Mb (probably the best value for your money)
High-end: Radeon 9800 Pro or XT, 128 or 256 Mb (they're both excellent, and yes, the XT is worth the extra $60 or so)
Dream: Radeon X800 XT 256 Mb
Nvidia:
Low end: GeForce FX 5200 128 Mb
Mid-Range: GeForce FX 5700 128 Mb
High-End: GeForce 5900/5950 Ultra 128 Mb
Dream: GeForce 6800 Ultra 256 Mb
Know that the 5950 and 6800 are both Dual slot, and the 6800 requires two independent 450 watt power sources. I would definitely suggest ATI for current gen cards.
Know, however, that you're picking a hell of a time to upgrade. Over the next 2 years, ATI and Nvidia are both releasing the rest of their next-gen chipsets, meaning the godly X800 and 6800 Ultra are going to become the low end of the next-gen cards. Beyond that, prices on everything are going to drop dramatically, so you're spending $500 on a card that'll be worth $100 in a year. Finally, all the next gen games are going to be geared toward knowing you'll be using 16 pipe (and hopefully 32 pipe) cards, so splurging on a 9800XT is going to seem like a waste of money when you find out it can't run games at max settings anymore. To top everything off, hardware prices have been inflated as hell the past few weeks for some reason, and I don't know when they'll drop again.
I've been having the same dilemma, so you know how it is. I suggest www.pricewatch.com as they carry up-to-the-day hardware prices. If you have any more questions, hit me on AIM.Comment
