    Didn't answer my question.

    Hypothetically, John Doe kills your entire family. Whats your reaction? Forgiveness? Hate? An Eye for an Eye?

        @arch0wl
        in your latter example, spanking isn't quite the same as death by police enforcement.
        spanking is more akin to disciplining and reintegration into society, which I do find acceptable.
        first world shelter? probably? I did get stabbed once and didn't get the feeling that I regret not having a knife to defend myself with, nor that others in the streets had a knife to help me in that case

        @klitz
        yes I'd feel hatred towards the murderer
        but I'm not the one to seek out vengeance, as that would be frontier justice
        that is up to the justice system

                two things

                1. my fiancee stopped a rapist by beating the shit out of a dude with a metal pipe. I think she also stabbed someone in another attempted rape but, her background is very #fromtheblock so I dunno exactly how these things went down since I'm not keen to be like "hey bb recall that time you were almost raped"

                (as you would imagine we can never really get TOO into rape fantasies since like, this one time we tried it in the pantry all I was thinking about was how she'd have beaten me over the head with the pickle jar)

                point is, knives are a good defense tool

                2. nonetheless I understand where you're coming from since in that scenario stabbing someone back would only make things worse. in your scenario I'd rather have pepper spray or a stun gun to debilitate the attacker so I can make an escape.

                            subduing a shooter with nonlethal force is slower and much more dangerous for the people doing the subduing than just using a gun. how many victims lives do you need to trade for the life of the shooter before it becomes worth it to use lethal force?

                              yeah the whole assault rifle thing is so stupid. like a semi automatic hunting rifle isnt just the exact same thing.

                              i mean picatinny rails are terrifying apparently.

                                Damn, looks like you technically beat me to the punch!

                                The only part I really wanted to comment on atm (and I admit this is me being needlessly pedantic):

                                note that fully automatic weapons *are* banned already.
                                For most people, it may as well be considered functionally true -- but in many cases they're not outright banned. Just heavily restricted and very expensive:
