actually, you might be too young to know this..but back in the day before kazaa and such, there were BBS, where you would chill in the mirc channel and wait to get the "elite" permission to download the games and programs off the servers.. Hence, 1337.

The reason 1337speak came about is to avoid the robots and spiders looking for certain phrases. When someone would ask for a program title, where to DL it, the robots searching the channels could catch it and bust them, so 1337speak is a way to hide the word. ex. Photoshop = />|-|o70 5\-\0|>
