well you could just mash two directionals and chain restart until a 1024 block formed in a corner via rng and finish in 2 minutes from there but lets be honest is that really worth anyone's time

left - up - left - down (repeat) seems to work well (gotten 512 several times and almost 1024...)

i should write a program to emulate this game and see where various key patterns get me

The problem with repeating that algorithm (I did down - left - down - right - down etc.) is that it fails later on when one bad 2 spawn messes things up and forces you to fix shit up. Otherwise you can get to 512 in a matter of seconds but no further than that unless you have godly luck

imo The only problem with writing an algorithm for different patterns and outcomes, is that the starting board is different every time

You guys are inconsiderate fucks. What has the world become? I was just out taking a break when you guys introduce me to this. I spent a good 4+ hours playing this and lost track of time. When I got off I noticed my skin had no color to it and I assumed it was because my eyes got used to seeing my skin tone rather than my extreme hunger. Geez thanks, it's not like I was planning to get things done today or something.

The trick behind the game is to lay down consecutive numbers side by side. I found that the most natural pattern for me is to put the highest number in the bottom right corner and to build up from there (in a snake pattern). At the end of the game, you should see a board like this :

0-0-0-0
0-0-2-4
64-32-16-8
128-256-512-1024

A pattern could give better results with human intervention at some strategic points : when the bottom line is filled with consecutive numbers, you could switch (mirror) the pattern so it could build up from the left, once there's a corresponding number, hit down, repeat.
Hitting "down-right-down-right-… left-right if stuck" creates a rainbow pattern every time but due to the lack of space, you get a game over quickly.
