well you can save anywhere like in Pokemon, and they saved probably every couple of minutes during the stream. So...

But yeah you have to gear up and not actually spend stupidly. However, you don't have that problem of "oh I died, my money is gone", more of "back to the goblins for another hundred battles because we splurged on potions instead of phoenix downs" lol

I have a feeling that eventually we'd have a file with 1 member alive at very stupidly low HP, and we'd save there and keep dying.

It wouldn't be fun to watch at all.

They should try Lufia I. A fairy revives you when everyone dies and you return to the last town.

aight I'm going to go play the JP version and see if I can get to the end before them. I've been working on my Japanese lately and I hear Pokemon doesn't really have kanji in it. It's very likely I will do it in less than half their time, but then again I'll be taking my time reading stuff.
