Yes, well, who wants to listen to a bland story... course story doesn't make up all of what people justify as there "reasons" to why mlp is popular. But then again, the art and animation could all be psychological moves as well :I

Yes but that's my point, the stories in MLP are rehashed cliché stories produced for mass-production of tv shows (understandable since it's a moneymaker, not an epic budget movie or fine art but still) that are tailored towards the psychological needs of children. For children it's all new since they've never (or hardly) encountered these kind of psychological phenomena before but for an adult, this shouldn't be -that- interesting.

And yes, you're partly right that the art side of the show is also psychological. But with the art side of things there are a lot of biological factors to account for as well (such as limitations of human eyes which makes certain colors or movement in general keep our attention because of automatic responses of the brain). I don't really see what you're trying to prove with that though?

Re: Why is MLP so popular?

I like the characters. They're quirky without being awkwardly weird, and I feel like I could totally find someone with a similar personality to that in real life. A lot of the more popular TV shows and whatnot have the same basic type of cast list, and the main characters generally have the same certain qualities to them. The main characters in MLP just feel more like everyday people you'd enjoy getting to know. They all have their strengths and flaws, and you get to see them using those strengths to help out with others' flaws, which adds a lot of character development.

Plus, there is a portion of the community that I do actually like. Most I don't (for various reasons), but there is a group that I generally enjoy hanging out with and sharing things with. And I like the music that is put out. Whether or not you actually like the show/fandom, a lot of the music is really nice quality for people who are just amateur musicians. Pretty sure everyone here knows Megamon, AKA Assertive Fluttershy, and may have listened to some of his tunes.

I dunno, despite all of the cringeworthy stuff that comes out of this crazy fandom, I feel like there's more than enough good coming out of it for it to be worth it.

Absolutely. In relation to the story-lines, yes they are cliché and overused, however it's the first time the younger generation has encountered these stories, so its the best fucking thing in the world to them haha.

This might seem weird, but I love the amount of creativity that goes into telling the same story. The different ways it could be approached. Is that weird?

Also, I plan on making kids movies / tv shows or whatever later in life, because I absolutely love creating magic for children. Hense why Finding Nemo is one of my favorite movies of all time lol. This is perhaps probably why I am not against the storyline, but more curious on ways to evolve it, and turn it into something new that hasn't been seen before while still applying it's core values.
(Granted, from a creativity standpoint this method is not recommended, but perhaps creativity can thrive from learning what has been successful and adapting from it?)

The reason I don't like Pokemon is that there is an inherent disconnect between the characters and myself, so I can't relate to them. I don't find the show interesting as a result.

I don't like Adventure Time because I just don't find the show funny after watching 3 episodes of it (the usual amount of episodes I give a show a chance to show it's good qualities). This could probably be my mindset, and just expecting humor with no substance. I might revisit it sometime in the future.

Because the entire basis of said episodes are really contrived, and they just aren't interesting to me. Simple as that.

Re: Why is MLP so popular?

Simply put, the "brony" fandom is very appealing to a certain segment of the population, and it's very easy to get into. All those other reasons such as "great storylines" and "hidden meanings" might hold true for a few individuals, but those reasons are secondary to the fact that people simply enjoy being part of a group. If the fandom didn't exist, there would be no reason to get deeply involved with the show; you might watch it and enjoy it, but you wouldn't go all-out with avatars and discussions and stuff.

The "brony" phenomenon has deservedly gotten a negative rep for the following reasons:

-Bronies post pony shit where it isn't needed or welcome
-Bronies have an annoying tendency to base their online identities around ponies, even on otherwise non-MLP-related communities (FFR being one example we can all relate to)
-Bronies, for some reason, make themselves very visible and thus, are an easier target than smaller but equally-annoying fanbases
-A few bronies display such ridiculous, awkward, and occasionally perverted behavior that they tarnish the whole community, most of whom are probably perfectly normal

There's a lot to learn from the world and their obsession to get in touch with their inner kid. That's probably where most of the disagreeing comes from with most of these "oh it's for kids why do you like that shit" sort of stuff.
