      Re: Atheism/Theism thread

welp i was baptised as a mormon when i was 8 and would go to church but eventually went through a really long apathetic phase towards religion and God when i was like 14-17. i now believe in all facets of my religion, which is constantly evolving because of our belief in modern day prophets and revelation that continues today like it was during biblical times (ie. mosaic law to new testament)

some major things that are different about mormonism compared to mainstream christianity is our belief that God and Jesus Christ are two seperate beings and that they have bodies of flesh and bone and that we were made in their image. we don't believe in the Nicene creed with the Trinity and all that. we believe that the priesthood (the authority to act in the name of God, used to perform baptisms, blessing the sacrament, etc.) was taken from the earth after the death of the 12 apostles, to be returned again to the earth again at a later time. we believe that joseph smith was a prophet that was given the priesthood keys to restore the original church that Christ himself set up way back during his earthly ministry. Yes it seems super random that we believe some dude was supposed to take on this huge task of bringing a new religion and translating some ancient records of the people living in the Americas about but i dont have the attention span to write that out right now.

also back when the church was young, a newspaper asked JS about what the mormons were all about and he outlined our basic beliefs into 13 different points

      13 Articles of Faith

honestly i can choose to not be a mormon anytime but i don't see that happening, especially with the knowledge i've gained and the experiences i have had. usually when people my age who are mormon lose faith it's because they live on their own and dont have their parents dragging them to church every sunday. but i have a strong testimony of the gospel i've been taught so i will continue to go to church.

Their own world view. It's your starting point of thought. to understand some one else's you need to begin with their starting point. Or really what that person assumes.

Thing is, when it comes to science, personal bias doesn't matter. It's the same for everyone, as we all share the same reality.

That's why atheists (and I am guilty of this too) get a little defensive when religious types try to shit on science, because it comes across as lunacy. It's like trying to argue that the world is flat or something.

If you want to debate religion, the only honest way to do it is by acknowledging what we do know with science, first.

What does "science" explain happens to you when you die?

                Nothing happens when you die.

It's like returning back to the state of nonexistence you were in for the 13.7 billion years that took place before you were born. Or it's like going under a general anesthetic, or a long/deep dreamless sleep. You don't experience anything.

Why did you put 'science' in quotation marks?

Science is just a method of acquiring knowledge about the physical world. It is used to form hypotheses, theories, and laws.

Here's what happens: Heartbeat, breathing, and blood flow cease. Then brain cells die from lack of oxygen.

Can something be inherently and objectively bleak if there is nobody around to judge it as such?

Animals die all the time, and they have been dying for millions of years.

You live a bleak life. You have nothing to look forward to, except death.
