Sounds to me like your sister has other issues with your dad and views about him from the past and this is just the icing on the cake that set her off. Just for instance (and this is a stab in the dark) perhaps the fact that he's paid for her plane tickets means nothing because she feels like he should have been there all along, not so far away that she needs to fly to see him. Abandonment issues from your parents divorce?
I know that I was super upset at my mom for stopping paying my tuition, but to me, it was 90% what that symbolized and what it meant. She thought I was being lazy, up to no good, not trying, being a slut (I had a bf I lived with), etc, and her not paying was me not being a good enough person for her.
