there are two main reasons why modern music gets as much attention as it does
1) it's accessible
2) it's dance-able
your personal dislike for a genre of music doesn't automatically make that genre "not music"

a lot of foreign people listen to american pop even though they don't understand the lyrics. in fact, my cousins in germany can actually sing songs in english despite not knowing what they're singing.
