    taiping rebellions

I feel dumb for having no idea this thing even existed until last night. Well, not so bad that I don't know rather large historical wars (I can't even keep up with current affairs), but rather that I've never heard of the circumstances of it.

This guy, Hong Xiuquan, claimed to be Jesus' brother. Jesus as in Jesus Christ, son of God, so presumably God's second son. I hear all sorts of things about religion saying it causes wars and stuff, and that belief in God is bad because you can then say that God tells you to murder or something and so it's justification to do immoral things, but no one has ever cited to me this head-on example of such delusional thinking of an individial causing a huge war only 150 years ago.
