I saw a fight about this on youtube (comment area in a vid). Under my opinion I feel that Crono Trigger was more ground breaking. I Just wanna see what you guys think. After choosing FF7 (Final Fantasy 7) or Crono Trigger please explain why if you can. "DO NOT POST IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED BOTH GAMES!"

Re: FF7 or Crono Trigger? Which was more ground breaking?
That's definitely a very tough question.
People who haven't played both games would just say "OMG CLOUD/SEPHIROTH FTW" but I understand how deep this question goes. Both FF7 and Crono Trigger definitely gets credibility for its amazing characters and expansive story lines. But the differences is that FF7 was pretty much the first 3D RPG, and that in itself made it big. But however, the Crono series introduces a story that can split off into multiple endings. After thinking about it, a great 3D rpg would have come out sooner or later, so I'm leaning more towards the side of Crono Trigger.Kitty's out to kill you <_<...

Re: FF7 or Crono Trigger? Which was more ground breaking?
Yes but FF7 did also finish in a way that it could split off into multiple ending, the FF team just didn't incorporate those elements into games around the time FF7 was there and made those ending years later, some examples are DoC, and the FF:AC and the new game explaining Zack's story which i forgot for some weird reason. Also isn't it Chrono Trigger are am i reading my case the wrong way, no sarcasm implied since in jap i think it's Crono. That's definitely a very tough question.

Re: FF7 or Crono Trigger? Which was more ground breaking?
I'd say that FF7 introduced a lot more people to RPGs in general. Despite me loving Chrono Trigger, I'd say that FF7 wins this time around.
Never thought I'd hear those words come out of my mouth.Comment

Re: FF7 or Crono Trigger? Which was more ground breaking?
Chrono trigger easily. Tons of characters, all with there own stories, the different eras (past, future, present) All the endings with thier variations and what not, and don't forget the whole newgame + (fighting Lavos if right at the beginning of the game if you go into the other teleporter thing).
Final Fantasy 7 is a good game, but it didn't do anything new for the genre, and really introducing a bunch of people to the genre really doesn't make it ground breaking in any way shape or form.CHILDHOOD, n.

Re: FF7 or Crono Trigger? Which was more ground breaking?
It's a close call. FF7 introduced a different way to do an RPG and released characters that hit it big with the merchendise. It also had many side quests you could do within the game incase the storyline got boring at some point. On the other hand Chrono Trigger was a huge hit that even without being 3D made a huge impact. Not only do you get side quests but you get the ability to travel though time to different eras. Plus the ability to do combined special attacks wich is something that FF7 lacks. FF7 is a good game but all in all Chrono Trigger asuringly takes home the trophy.sigpicComment

FF7
It was the first 3d RPG, on TOP of having an expansive storyline, that shoved Square Enix into it's top selling days.
Chrono Trigger on the other hand, had a great storyline, and it immersed you in a world as large, if not larger than FF7, but I think FF7 did win this fight, partly because 50% of RPG fans have never played Chrono.

Re: FF7 or Crono Trigger? Which was more ground breaking?
Hmm. Generic Final Fantasy game versus one of the most original RPGs to date...
This is tough.
versusAt the time of its release, certain aspects of Chrono Trigger were seen as revolutionary — including multiple endings,[2] plot-related sidequests focused on character development, unique battle system, and detailed graphics.
...
Chrono Trigger's gameplay deviates from traditional RPGs in that, rather than random encounters, many enemies are openly visible on field maps or lie in wait to ambush the party. Contact with enemies on a field map initiates a battle that occurs directly on the field map itself rather than on a separate battle screen.
Seriously, stop riding FF7 so much. It's a terribly sub-par game. I cannot understand how so many people consider it one of the greatest games ever made.Like previous installments of the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy VII consists of three basic gameplay modes: an overworld map, town and dungeon field maps, and a battle screen.
...
During its turn-based battle sequences, the game uses the same Active Time Battle (ATB) system designed by Hiroyuki Ito and first featured in Final Fantasy IV.Comment

Most of the people who think its the greatest game evarz, it was probably their first RPG, so thats why they regard it so highly.CHILDHOOD, n.

Re: FF7 or Crono Trigger? Which was more ground breaking?
FF7 got people into the RPG genre (despite it being terrible compared to Chrono Trigger) and Chrono Trigger did a lot more for the genre itself.
So, in terms of getting people into RPGs, FF7. In terms of actual awesomeness, Chrono.Comment

Re: FF7 or Crono Trigger? Which was more ground breaking?
it depends entirely on what you think constitutes "groundbreaking." Chrono Trigger has a lot going for it. New Game+ is the best thing ever, has been the only game in my eyes to use time travelling right, a dozen different endings, one of the best stories ever told (up there in that discernable space with ocarina of time and ff6). however, if you're looking for a genuine revolution in rpgs, ff7 takes the cake. it brought rpgs into the 3d world. it has a great story (not as good as any of the three i've mentioned before, but it's still great). the death of a main character has never been so well done within a game. limit breaks and the dynamic of materia revolutionized the battle screen. it goes on.
personally, i don't like to compare them. i've got more hours logged on these two games than for any other game i own, by far. this may be because i keep playing new game+ and that i actually figured out through process of elimination how to breed a damn golden chocobo. but there's something to be said for how these games don't bore me after all these hours. my characters hit the maximum level in both these games long ago, but there's still so much more to do. it's games that you can really play forever that are truly great.
if you're looking for the better game however, chrono trigger wins hands down. but if the question is about being groundbreaking or revolutionary or whatever, the picture's muddier.
uhh, sorry for that. yea yea tl;drBack to "Back to Earth"

Re: FF7 or Crono Trigger? Which was more ground breaking?
like I said before, Getting people into a genre =/= groundbreaking. It takes alot more than alot of people buying a game to make it ground breaking. By that logic the madden games that are released every year are god damn masterpieces.FF7 got people into the RPG genre (despite it being terrible compared to Chrono Trigger) and Chrono Trigger did a lot more for the genre itself.
