For all of you that don't know, Xenogears is a Square RPG. It was highly unpublicized outside Japan, so it did not see much action overseas.
It has a very cool, complicated, and confusing storyline. It is the most confusing plotted game I have EVER SEEN (it tops FF7 by a mile). However, it is the good kind of confusing. Hell, its so good, you wont even CARE that it is confusing. Its really that good.
Anyways, it is part 5 of 6 (I think) of THE XENOSAGA, where Xenosaga (the game) is part 6 of 6.
The graphics, I will admit, are not exactly top notch (it was made in 1998, so forgive them). In fact, the characters are 2d, overlayed on a spacial sort of 2d map. You can switch camera angles, which is very nice.
However, in battle, the graphics get a little better. Plus, there a good battle interface, where you can even do COMBOS (a first in an RPG made by Square). There are also magic attacks, which you can get by leveling up (not by items, materia, espers, or draw points).
However, the thing that really makes this game shine is the GEARS. Think of gears as mechs, only not outfitted with 100000000 weapons. Also, they look alot cooler. One of the nice things about gears is that you can customize their equipment, so they will perform differently in battle (but like anything else in real life, it costs you a good amount of money). Additionally, the gears are animated differently than the characters, with a 3d scheme. Also, gear-sized monsters are animated with a 3d scheme.
For every character you get (except one, kind of), you can get a gear. Plus, there are Omnigears for some of your characters (and some of your enemies, inevitably). Omnigears are like Uber-Gears. There are 13 in the world (only 11 or 12 appear in the game, though. It is debated on fan sites if some things are Omnigears. Who cares?). If I didn't mention it before, most of your enemies (the human enemies) possess gears. Also, if you have the skilletz, you can make your gear do combos, with fricking immense amounts of damage.
The characters are very well developed. Very, VERY well developed. They have distinct personalities, fight differently, etc.
You begin as Fei Fong Wong, living in Lahan, a regularly peaceful village, until....You see when you play the game. Its SWEET!
The CGs are the best done I have seen in my LIFE. Well, better than FF7's, at least. And, some of the scenes aren't computer generated, but are hand drawn Anime, if you like that. If you don't, you will respect the CGs.
One of the most interesting things about the game is it delves deep into culture of different societies, governments, and religions of different areas. You might be like: "EEEEWW! Religion!". I am not too big on religion myself, even though I sometimes claim to be, but trust me. It is good.
Overall my favorite RPG made, well balanced, good plot, fun as fricking hell (except where you are stuck underground with Bart. Boring). Do you like invisible cities in the sky, and mysterious flying saucers? So do I.
EDIT: Holy SHIT, that was a long post! Freak83: I hope you read it. it is worth your time. Remember: I read NS! That was....long.
