THE SPECIALISTS - A Half-Life Mod

Current Game Version: 2.0
My thoughts
Now we should all know by now that the one computer game I treasure is Natural-Selection. Yet their are other games out there that are quite good and unfortunatly aren't that well heard of. The Specialists is another game that deserves to be more heard of, and hopefully after reading this, you will definatly want to download it.
What is The Specialists?
The Specialists is another Half-Life modification quite unlike Natural-Selection. It was thought up by John Matrix and created to be a one-of-a-kind shooter mod based on movies. (Yes plural). Well other games have been created based on movies. How is this one different? Well... it's good.
What's Gameplay Like?
The action is fast and furious. You are set out in an enviornment that is in most cases out of a great action movie such as the Matrix and given guns that do more realistic damage. You will be leaping through the air, flipping around to dodge bullets, and even dodging them in Neo's way in the Matrix of moving in slow mo turning back... if you know how :P . And of course, in doing this, you'll just look plain cool. Especially when you can see yourself move around and play in 3rd person by pressing the x button.
Weapons
The variety of weapons you can choose from is amazing, aside from being able to pick a gun, you can customize it to your preferance with selections such as laser sight, scope, flashlight, etc. The more weapons you have the more weighed down you will be and you will walk slower and not be able to do as many cool stunts. On the other hand, you'll have a great selection of weapons to use during your battles. You will be able to pick weapons from the catagories of:
- Pistols (glock, desert eagle, raging bull aka magnum, and more!)
- Submachine Guns (Mini-Uzi, MP5K, MAC10, and more!)
- Rifles (M4A1, AK47, M16A4, and more!)
- Shotguns ( USAS-12, MOSSBERG 500, BENELLI - M3, and more!)
- Special Purpose (well... go find out!)
If you happen to find a combination you really like... then just save it and load it later with the click of a button!
Gun Combat
In this game you will undoubtly come to the point where you must shoot your gun in hopes of killing someone... Yes, this is a bit violent but.... ah what am I talking about? Kill them all!
Well you can be boring and just run and shoot your opponent for 1 point like oh so many people do. Or you can play the specialist way, do stunts by pressing "q" or double tap jump. See that meter right beside your crosshair? Well no... not right now, but in game there is a little vertical meter. When the little ball is in the top section, you can do high stunts, middle, medium stunts, bottom, low stunts. Do them by pressing "q" or double jump. What's the advantage? Well for one you become much harder to hit, two, if you kill someone while doing a stunt, you get extra points. And 3... IT JUST LOOKS SO FREAKIN COOL!
Melee Combat
Ok this one requires more explination...explonation...explanation... one of those. Melee combat is really useful in this game if you know how to use it. Especially since some people will go around using only it... and melee can disarm you, so you better know how to fight without your gun if you're going to get disarmed. You have 4 main melee weapons:
Kung Foo (Unarmed combat):
Alright, this one is useful because it's what you're going to do if you're unarmed. Sure you can take out your weapon again. But if they know to disarm, they'll know to disarm you again, and again, until you haven't fired your gun or inflicted any damage. So use Kung Foo in these situations. You have 5 main attacks with it:
- Punch
- Kick
- Jump Punch
- Jump Kick
- Flip Kick thingy
Punch is basic, left mouse. Weaker than a kick.
Kick is basic, right mouse.
Jump punch is well, jump and left mouse, it's weaker than a jump kick but it tends to block other melee attacks sometimes.
Jump kick is obviously jump and right mouse. It's powerful, and good for disarming. You can do this move anytime. You do not have to be unarmed to use it. Do it to disarm and possibly kill your opponent for 3 points if you get close enough!
the Flip Kick is really strong but you need your high stunt moves availble to do it. Oh and keep this in mind. You do not need to be in Kung Foo mode to do it. As long as you have your high weapons slot availble this can always be used. Do it by tapping jump twice while standing still. A great time to use it is when a noob melee'er is coming at you doing nothing but jump kicks.
One last thing, while in Kung Foo mode, you have a power meter, your attacks require it, so have enough to continue attacking.
3 Points per kill
Seal Knives:
These are light combat knives. They attack fast but aren't very strong. You also have 10 of them for throwing and can be thrown considerably far.
3 points per kill
Combat Knives:
These are stronger than seal knives and also heavier. You only have 5 of them to throw and they fall fast so aim carefully. However, if they make contact when thrown, they will kill the target in one hit regardless of their health and armour.
3 points per kill
Katana:
This is the strongest melee weapon. In most cases you can kill your target in two slices, but it's disadvantage is it can't be thrown and it doesn't give you as much points per kill.
2 points per kill
Rankings
After you kill a certain number of people, you will be given a rank where it says "WAITING" or "DEAD" on the scoreboard. When you are awarded the rank, you will get some health back, and if you kill someone with a high rank, you may be awarded extra points. Ranks are:
KILLER
DEMOLITION
SPECIALIST
UNSTOPPABLE
Powerups
Ah yes, powerups are scattered throughout the levels and activated by pressing "z". Each powerup is useful in it's own way, so if you get them, use them.
Slow Motion:
This looks like an arrow you see as the play button on a VCR or DVD remote. You will be given 5 seconds of slow motion where when used, everyone will move in slow motion for those 5 seconds. Use it to line up your shots better, especially when doing stunts.
You also are given 1 second of slow motion for each kill (up to a maximum of 5) as long as you are not carrying any other powerups.
Slow Pause:
This powerup looks like a hand. When you pick it up you will be given 3 seconds of slow pause where it will cause everyone on the map to go super slow except yourself who will regain almost normal speed. Aside from using it in combat, it's also useful to use in a large open area where you are likely to be sniped and are just running through.
Infinite Ammo:
It looks like the infinite sign which if you don't know resembles the number 8. You are given 3 seconds of infinite ammo which is useful with any gun, but is also great to use with combat knives since they can kill in one hit.
Double Fire-Rate:
This looks like a bullet being shot, and when used you will fire twice as fast (as name suggests). True with a gun you will run out of ammo pretty quickly but if you know how to aim and can just get a kill faster, this is great. It's also remarkably good in melee where you just continue swiping without an ammo count.
Maps
In The Specialists you will travel to locations familier and unfamilier alike. The creator of the game is called "John_Matrix" so you can probably guess what a number of the maps resemble. Ah remember the lobby scene in the Matrix? Well you can fight there, and the Dojo where Neo fought Morphious as well. There are many different maps, and the visuals are great. Go on, give it a try. The maps are:
