                Re: MapleStory

So I come back from Christmas breaking at Jenna's (aka: no internet, at least not for my computer ) and FINALLY got 50 graham crackers. I figured I'd test the damage with these things before maxing amp and then do it again after maxing it. According to formulas, with max amp I'll do over 10k. For now I only have level 12, I think, amp. =\ Anywho:

Before (this has about my lowest and highest in it. Should be 5373~7169 according to formula):

                After (6792~8888 according to formula):

Not as big of a difference that gelts do for everybody else, but hey, can't complain about ~1500 more damage. 6 more levels (30 more int and 18 more levels in amp) + pie = 8,433~10,977 damage. Better stock up on pies for then. =)

EDIT: Oh yeah, Oni, about the speed/jump thing. Movement is all clientside (I hear they made it serverside for a while in early beta but it was insanely hard to control so they switched it back) but they must just have things that watch for non-normal movements. Same way there were things that would detect if you were in certain unaccessable areas and kick you out of the game if you went there (people used to get DCed for teleporting to certain off-map areas, like below the floor of the Ellinia-Orbis boat), they probably just check to see if people are moving way too fast. I bet if you lagged hard and moved your character far enough it'd disconnect you for suddenly "teleporting" once the lag stops.

What I don't understand is why nobody has figured out a way to do infinite damage. Damage calculations are obviously all clientside, so there's gotta be a way to make it so you always send the server 99999 damage. They might have something in place to auto-kick people if that happened (like with the movement thing), though. Then again, I don't get disconnected if I lag hard and do enough damage to kill several monsters. I dunno, I just figure there's gotta be some way to do it.

Joey was telling me about it a long time ago.

                          Back when he actually played.

ps my classes start this week, so what with part time workings, I'll have like 1 or 2 days a week where I'll actually be able to play a lot. In fact, I really should be going to bed... I've been up for 24+ hours and I need to pick up my sister from school at 3, then shortly go off to class, then get back to the hotel for more workings.

I vacced up some characters just to defame people. The whole process of getting them all is very, VERY quick. The only reason it takes an hour to get to 10 for most people is because they have to spread out and do quests, etc. It doesn't matter if you're just making defame chars. You can literally turn a vac on in the first map with tons of green snails, put hold a key down, and come back in a matter of minutes.

                            It's pretty fun, actually.

Damage is serverside. I can make it say enormous numbers on my side, though.

Okay, damage. Say you do 50,000 damage. It displays on your screen, then a packet is sent. It does not contain 50,000 anywhere in it, but it means 50,000. A lot of MMORPGs do this so the damage cannot be editted.

Now then, have you ever hit something while the server's lagging? Do you notice you hit it, the damage displays IMMEDIATELY, and then, a few seconds later, the monster dies? To throw it off some more, do you know how the monster still falls back? The placing of the monsters is all clientsided, just as NPCs and everyone's characters are. That's why you can make everything go into the exact same place and have absolutely NO ONE else see it except you, but at the same time, still hit that stuff from what looks like far away to others. Anyway, about the monster dying a few seconds later. That means the server is just now responding to the packet you sent it and it is just now sending it back to you and everyone else in a range.

Know why vaccing is now clientsided and only works in a certain range? Remember how things are loaded in "boxes" or "rectangles"? Remember what clientsided means? Indeed.

I hope this explains some stuff. It's really difficult to explain to everyone, being that this isn't a hacking forum and I'm pretty limited in how I can word things.

                              Re: MapleStory

I'm not completely stupid, I know how to tell when things are clientside.

Damage calculations are definitely clientside. Like you said, when you hit a monster it shows the damage immediately, whether you're lagging or not. That wouldn't be possible unless 1) damage calculations are clientside or 2) they're partly serverside (server sends player random number every so often to determine damage, for example). If 1) was true then, while lagging, you wouldn't see any damage appear. If 2) was true, then you'd see the exact same damage appear over and over while lagging. Neither happens. Damage calculations are all clientside.

Okay, damage. Say you do 50,000 damage. It displays on your screen, then a packet is sent. It does not contain 50,000 anywhere in it, but it means 50,000. A lot of MMORPGs do this so the damage cannot be editted.
You worded this kinda weird. You mean that the 50k is encoded and isn't just straight up "50k"? So the packet might have "salfh" in it but it means 50k? Well it's not like the memory values of things are blatently obvious, but people still figure those out. If I knew all I had to do was decode that thing to get infinite damage I think I would put some effort into it.
