idk i just always assume people talk about online since i have no life or friends to play irl with (jk theres tournaments around here im just really lazy)

edit: my main annoyance with it is that its essentially saying "I don't want to actually try to get better tech skill or mechanics, i get me wins me own way and thats what counts, yuuuup...." its basically ruining other peoples experience by forcing them to counter a style that not only has a low skill requirement vs. the reward it gives, but the practice gained from it won't even improve your own gameplay

sure u could argue that being able to adapt and counter any playstyle is improving but idk, I don't really feel that way

either way someone can play whatever way they want, im just joking around anyways, i still think its boring to play against though, like playing vs a puff who just tries to time you out and never approaches in melee... not necessarily a bad strategy, but an unenjoyable one to counter

Oh, that's something I can agree with.

Online is trash... but I play it anyways because it's really the only way to play with other players (randoms) that doesn't require to go to a venue and pay $5.

See the difference here though, is that a lot of the time with puff camping, it's often mechanically impossible to beat in melee. Peach being down even 1 stock vs a lame jigglypuff is realistically near-impossible to come back from.

Being a stock down vs, say, ganondorf in ultimate is difficult of course, but the gameplan vs him is by no means near-impossible to achieve and come back from, let alone any more difficult than vs an actual top tier with zoning/projectiles like peach or joker.

For a heavy player, they spend all day often just getting camped out, so the game becomes dodging a literal minefield of projectiles and reading the opponents counter-approach or escape option, and that is just not easy. For the lighter char/zoner, the game is keeping the big guys out so they can't smother you. Overall or in individual interactions it's not too difficult, but being 100% consistent defensively for a match is just not easy.

Turns out smash is pretty hard

edit: Basically tl;dr melee jiggly playing lame is based in non-interactivity, whereas zoner vs heavy in ultimate is still full of interaction, and the degeneracy is dependent on the players, not the character.

So far I've tended to stick to sword people: I've drifted from Toon Link, to Mii Swordfighter (1321 controls), to Young Link, to the Link with the bombs that you can explode at any time. I'm at Link with controllable bombs right now and I'm not G O O D but I'm not b a d either.

Also Pro Controller = only controller. Gamecube controllers are impossible for me.

exploiting the fact that netcode when playing online is terrible and laggy to abuse "missed techs" doesnt seem like a very good thing to me but to each their own

I only play in-person. I don't even own a Switch to play online with, I only play when I hang out with my friends on their consoles. I have literally never even seen what online Ultimate gameplay looks like.

Everyone I play with is extremely good; two are easily top 10 in my state. They don't just "miss techs and die" lol they're all fucking nuts, the only way I can have a shot of being competitive (especially since I can't easily practice movement/combos myself, see: not owning my own Switch) is to play a good mental game. Obviously everyone knows why I play this kind of high risk high reward style, my friends don't mind it because when they play in tournaments its not like heavy players don't exist, you gotta get practice against people who play this way if you want to get out of groups.
Re: heavies being "unenjoyable to counter" lol what the hell, matchups versus heavies give the hypest moments IMO. Watching two flowchart top tiers just trade combos and fucking teleport back to the ledge once they're offstage is a snorefest after the 20th time you've seen it, shit's a lot more real when one or two missteps can kill me because my recovery is shit and one or two missteps can kill my opponent because they're light as fuck. That's real Smash.




I didn't think playing a heavy and trying to get reads would be a particularly controversial opinion but damn, you're assuming a whole lot for calling me "cancer" for no reason lol

Oh yeah no that's exactly my situation. I don't own a switch yet, and I've only ever played at lunch at school since... we can just straight up bring whole-ass games consoles to school apparently. I am easily the worst of the group, but the games I play are hype af cuz I know enough to actually DO things, but not enough to know what the other person's doing.

Sometimes things devolve to me runnin around pressing buttons like a madman hoping something happens, and sometimes, very rarely, I actually get a burst of skill like no other and just DEMOLISH the best player there, it's the literal best.

But yeah I only just recently discovered BotW Link so I think I'mma try him out whenever someone brings their Switch again or I go to someone's house.

I did Mii Swordfighter for a bit because they could counter and do the Link HYYYAAAAAAA move with the up-b, however I quickly realized I absolutely suck at Mii Swordfighter and really only played it so that "nae-nae'd" could pop up at the end-screen when/if I ever beat anyone.
