    older games vs new games

which do you think is better the old school arcade games or the new 3D graphics games. i would say old school because some games today get way to flashy without any gameplay or storyline.

      SUPER MARIO BROS.!!!!!!

Ok seriously, NES era games are just more fun than they should be for some reason.

You know its not all about graphics. I enjoy playing 8-bit games just as much as 3d games. I'm up for a game of Metal Slug instead of Halo.

You can't beat the simplicity and level of fun the 8-but games brought. Don't forget about the replay value too. It's hard to find a 3D game I'm willing to play over and over and over.

But, for games like.. Fatal Frame I or II.. or (soon to be) Silent Hill 4.. if they were 8-bit they wouldn't be scary.. but I don't think that would necesarily make them crappy..

Some games are just better all around as 2D instead of 3D like some GBA games or RPG's or (especially) Fighters..

New age games, they're easier and more of a movie where you push a button every 20 minutes.

Metal Slug is not 8-bits. It's 32, IIRC.

Personally, I miss the 8-bit era. It was FUN, and game creators didn't do it for the money, like they do now. It was more a creative type thing. I picked up the Mega Man Anniversary Collection not too long ago, and I still have fun with those games in all their old-school glory as I did 10 years ago. Megaman X7, the only fully 3d non-rpg Megaman game to date, sucked horrendously in comparison.

Graphics does not make the game. It never will.

i'm not saying all 3d games are bad. there are some really great ones but for every one that is worth playing over and over there seem to be 5 games that are just either ok or horrible. and another problem is games have become to easy. i would like a little bit of a challenge but since most people are too lazy to work at something they make it easy.

There are hard games. You just have to look for them. Try Ninja Gaiden for the X-Box. It's not as hard as the original games, but it is a damn challenging game, if I've ever seen one.

The majority of the time games were hard back in the old days were from crappy coding, but oddly enough, it didn't detract from gameplay unlike that same type of thing occuring nowadays.

If you want hard, get ikaruga. I don't think I'm exagerating when I say only 1/1,000,000 people can beat it on hard. I only know of around 10 that have, and I've been on multiple ikaruga messege boards. (I can't even come close)

Oh, and back on topic, I perfer old school games. More challenge, more replay, more fun. Come on, the old mega mans were 100 times harder then the new ones, but still weren't frusterating and I actually like them more then the new ones. I just friggin hate the NES controller . Like scorpio said, new age games are just movies practically. FFX was more watching then playing.

Movies are for when the story of a game comes across an event that has to happen too specifically to be put into control of the player. We sacrifice gameplay for the storyline so the game can feel more in-depth or whatever.

Scripted events aren't nessesarily bad, it just depends on how they are used.

3d is way better if they made some old games new then that would be cool.

The fact of the matter is that people's tastes change. The biggest reason for this is how mainstream the video game market is becoming. You have to be a true gamer to appreciate great gameplay and plot, but anybody can recognize great graphics. The reason they're easier now is another factor of that. Super hard games (MMX, Super Metroid, Contra, anyone?) from way back when were great for the niche factor of gamers (about 99% of them) but not so much for the casual weekend warrior. Games released now try to bridge that gap to make games more accessable and fun to the general public, which is why you have hardcore "old-school" gamers complaining.

It's true. Gotta be the hardest of its genre.

You know what? I liked Moogy's site so much I'm going to post my own and quote what needs to be quoted.

Nobody cares about graphics if the game plays like dog s**t. I'm bored to tears with first person shooters. Changing the theme from one time period to another isn't enough anymore, assholes. Did someone beat you to the punch on that killer WWII shooter you were making? Don't worry, just take the same concept, change a few textures, and call it Battlefield Vietnam. We won't notice. Hell, why not Battlefield Korea?
It is generally agreed upon that back in the day when video games weren't as popular as they are now programmers had much more time to think about the game they wanted to make and add as much of a story they wanted to. Nowadays, they are pressed for time and have to cut a few things out of most games which leaves the gamer hanging. Games often have no replay value and even the multiplayer gets old after a while.

Personally, I'm going to say that Golden Sun was one of the greatest games of all time. It was a small handheld game for the GBA that took up 60 hours of my life. I haven't had a game do that since Super Smash Brothers Melee. This game didn't require 4 discs like your stupid RPGs on the Sony. No. They managed to fit all this in to a small cartridge and play it on a handheld system. And the storyline to the game(s) is astounding. I am still anticipating the third release, but I'm sure due to impopularity Camelot will never make the game...
