lol that is literally almost one of the blandest shots from the game you could have possibly chosen.
But N64 graphics at the time were considered state of the art in terms of realtime rendering (OoT was released in 1998-1999 in the US).
Oh sure I didn't pick something you can find 5 minutes into the game. Because that's what they focused most on. I was pulling something from a random point in the game. Every place that doesn't directly have to do with Hyrule Castle looks like absolute garbage.
Also N64 was not in any way superior to PS1 if that's what you are getting at. Suikoden II (released the same year as OOT) had 3D rendering and did it better. Granted it was a mixture of 2D and 3D with most emphasis on the 2D aspect. It still had way better presentation than OOT did, and that's pretty bad considering it's one of the titular games in the N64 collection. Hell if we want to talk about if one system's graphical capabilities were superior, I'm sure everyone will agree it was PS1's. So I dunno what you mean by "state-of-the-art."
"But Pseudo! This doesn't have to do with whether the game was purely enjoyable or not!" But it does. Having a section of a game look as bad as it did in the screenshot I provided takes away from being able to immerse yourself in the game fully, and that was hardly the only area that looked terrible. It goes to show just how unready the technology was to jump to 3D. But they had to start somewhere and I guess their failures on OOT are part of the reason Skyward Sword was anywhere as good as it was. Sorry if you guys enjoyed OOT, I couldn't touch it until it got at least the half decent port to 3DS.
As far as playing it when it came to the 3DS I thought it was a fine game with some hints of LTTP on it, which means it wasn't an awful game by any means. Just a game with some problems.
Is the term sprite a misnomer for something else? I'm talking about these ugly character graphics lmao. I'm not well-versed in shit like this sry
np yeah they were pretty bad I have to agree. They didn't try very hard to make them look better than the engine could handle though so it's better than what happened with OOT.
(sprites refer to 2D shit like SNES/NES era specifically, I think they call 3d stuff models)
Christ, you know what was a hojillion times worse than the "sprites?"
How some of the videos had fairly realistic characters:
And others pulled THIS bullshit:
That 2nd one is a pre-fucking rendered FMV.
WHY.
This is the mark of a mediocre production team imo. Thank fuck the FMVs in 8 and 9 were a titanic improvement.
What are you talking about, they did with the engines they had in hand, do you have any idea what FFVII cost???
Also, want to see elite Playstation graphics? Heads to Parasite Eve II:
Imo this kicks a lot of PS2 productions in the face.
Interestingly (but getting slowly off topic), the 3rd birthday (Parasite Eve 3) featured graphics that actually kick pretty much ANYTHING the PS Vita has to offer, and it's a PSP game. Linking shower scene from that game.
