I think there's merit to asking why we find certain things fun and/or addicting. It's a perfectly legitimate/interesting question. Some people are content with "We find stuff fun because we find it fun," but others want to know the underlying mechanisms, which gets into all sorts of interesting biological/social shit.

I would agree with you, if that were the question Charu asked.

Re: Why is the First Person Genre so popular?

To expand on my first post, there is also another point that cannot be ignored as to the success of the FPS genre. Learning curve.

Call of Duty, at it's core is a very simple game to learn, and the mechanics are very streamlined. For instance, in Team Deathmatch, or just regular Deathmatch for that matter, there isn't very much involved to it at all. You pick an equipment loadout, you run around and click on people's heads.

If you ever want to have a chance to become even remotely good at StarCraft: Brood War, on the other hand, you have to spend tons of hours to become not only proficient at mechanics, but learning the game as well. StarCraft stresses multitasking much more than most people are use to, even if they are familiar with the RTS genre. Even after a lot of time is spent becoming mechanically proficient enough to be somewhat competent in that regard, the metagame itself is very deep and involved.

Back to the FPS genre, think about Quake: Live for a moment. The number of players playing Quake: Live compared to a call of duty game is small. Sure, Quake is simple at the surface, you have an array of weapons that you shoot people with, but there is a lot more to it than that. Map control is the bulk of it, in addition to extra more mechanics such as bunny hopping and rocket jumping that don't exist in Call of Duty. Additionally, there is another multitasking element to it as well, that being extrapolating where your opponent is at all times in duel and timing different power-ups.

TL;DR: Games that have small learning curves do not require nearly as much of a time sink to play effectively, so they are more likely to capture a players attention, and retain them as well.

I'd like to see you play Counter Strike.

The learning curve was the reason I dropped it before hitting 10 hours. The community, being as old as it is, was very unforgiving for newer players like me.

I think you're oversimplifying the genre. Your statement is similar to claiming that FFR's learning curve is easy. All you have to do is tap the key corresponding to the one displayed.

Re: Why is the First Person Genre so popular?

That's why I used Quake Live as another example. There are plenty of FPS games with steep learning curves, but they aren't as popular as games like Call of Duty. Call of Duty in general is a huge focal point of the FPS genre, and why it is so popular, so my statement regarding small learning curves mostly applies to it, not games like Quake, Counter-Strike, Tribes, Team Fortress Classic, etc.

You have to keep in mind that people who are streaming and watching streams are only a subset of the playerbase for any game, and the percentage of those doing such is different for each game.

Sorry, I must have been confused when reading your post.

You begin by talking about the FPS learning curve. Then you talk about Call of Duty and claim it has an easy learning curve. You move onto RTS games, giving StarCraft as an example and claim that it's more complex. You move back to FPS games and give an example of one with more advanced mechanics and end your post with this TL;DR:

I couldn't find your point, given how jumpy your statements were, so I assumed you didn't have any and made one for you.

                        My apologies.

I leave out information that I think need not be mentioned, but then I leave holes, so sorry for the confusion! I can understand how you would think that though. I used other examples just to contrast the numbers because lets face it, Call of Duty is the clear victor in terms of the number of players that play for the FPS genre.

I don't have any numbers, but from my perspective, I can agree with you in terms of FPS popularity. The louder a group is, the more attention they get. When people who are not into FPS games look over at the genre, they are deafened by the screaming CoD fans, and other fans of various big name titles. It's understandable why their first impression would be corrupt.

However, they should also realize how inaccurate first impressions can be, and shouldn't be so quick to judge.

It's painful to watch people stand by these exact ideals in certain arguments, then quickly turn around and break the fundamentals of said ideals for convenience in other arguments.

Off topic: I'm super tired right now. It's kind of hard for me to concentrate on this thread.
