    Re: Frog Fractions

I made it through the LONG mars underwater passage way while hearing the story of some portuguese guy. Then reached a space shuttle. then the game changed to only a text thing with commands, got to fix some electrical wires in a room full of strawberry Bacon milkshake goo, and then Im stuck...

That part was definitely not friendly to non English speakers =(

          Re: Frog Fractions

Am I the only one who just really didn't like this game? I found it to be very tedious. Even once I got past that first tedious area thanks to the hint.

It's not that I don't like surreal. There are surreal games that I love. I just don't like this game in particular. The entire thing felt like a huge chore. The dragon was slow due to far too many animated segments for a Flash game and many parts of the game, especially the underwater part, were just inching along and took forever. None of the SHMUP parts were challenging in the slightest -- anyone half decent at SHMUPs should have found it ridiculously easy. The trick at the first part is vastly unfair because you might only discover it by chance and you might never discover it, and there is no logical way to discover it other than by accident or someone gives you a hint.

Clearly, a good amount of effort went into the making of this game, and it did have a unique charm at times, but unfortunately, IMO the bad outweighs the good and it was just far too tedious and took far too long to get anywhere, and the bit of humor it had didn't seem worth the tedium.

I guess I'll break down my personal ratings

          Game Control: 1/10
          Fun Factor: 2/10
          Graphics: 9/10
          Music: 9/10
          Uniqueness: 10/10
          Tedium: 10/10
          Humor: 5/10
          Overall: 2/10

Clearly many people liked the game and if you disagree with my opinion on it, that's fine. In fact I'm glad you found something fun for you.

I don't think the aim was just to be surreal, but to sort of mimic/highlight some of the amusing absurdities of certain types of games. Maybe some of the nostalgia/satire appeal was lost on you because you haven't played a lot of the games being referenced?

I don't think any part of the game was meant to be challenging. In fact I don't even know if you can lose it in the traditional sense... you can get stuck by just not knowing what to do, but nothing you do has any real negative consequence, apart from just making the player spend a bit longer on a given part. I don't really see why you see this as a negative, since the point of the game is definitely not to provide a challenge that can only be passed by having skill.

The grind factor combined with bad controls and the game running slow as molasses at parts are reasons enough not to like the game. If it had enough redeemable quality to counter the negatives I may have viewed it differently. Sadly, IMO, the humor it offered was not enough to counter the bad program design. Some skill aspect may have lent additional redeemable quality.

In short, everything I already stated.

Or basically they'd have a pretty solid game here if they'd
                a) Fix the controls -- the mouse + keyboard thing really isn't great.
                b) Cut out unnecessary rendering -- there's no reason the dragon needs as many animated segments as it has, for example, and it just slows the game down creating bad lag.
                c) Remove the grind factor. Nearly an entire game shouldn't feel like a grind. The first part was a grind until you happen upon the secret, then the ocean part was a huge huge grind. I'd recommend in-game hints in that first area, and cutting the ocean area's size in half if not down to one fourth of what it is.
