I'm sorry I keep making threads about this game, but im just so excited.
IGN has received information that in the upcoming issue of Famitsu Weekly, the next installment in the "Mario RPG" series will be unveiled. Titled Mario Story 2 (The original Paper Mario was named Mario Story in Japan), the game is being developed at Intelligent Systems, the team responsible for the original Paper Mario as well as such titles as Advance Wars, and Fire Emblem.
This will be Intelligent Systems' first GameCube title, and IGN indicates that the graphical style will be similar to the original N64 game, in that there will be 2D characters on 3D backgrounds. One specific new gameplay element that IGN has learned is that Mario will apparently be able to turn himself into a paper airplane and fly around.
IGN states that a Japanese release date has been scheduled for sometime this year. No word yet on a specific date for release overseas, such information however should become available at E3.
IGN has managed to obtain translated information out of the latest Famitsu Weekly magazine where Paper Mario 2 was unveiled.
From what has been given out so far, it seems that the game will play very similar to the original N64 title. The battles will be turn based, but will retain a lot of action elements, however, supposedly there will be new strategy commands that will be available during battles as well.
As with the first game, expect Paper Mario 2 to include a wealth of mini games to keep you entertained. The quiz show is making a reappearence with an all new host, a giant Thwomp. Apparently one will also be able to control Princess Peach once again at certain points in the game.
A most intriguing screenshot showed what appears to be a version of Super Mario Bros only Bowser Koopa seems to be the star this time around. Many features from the original are also returning: the badges, inns, currency and items, as well as the "S" save blocks.
Storyline is still being kept under wraps, save for the precence of a mysterious door that has been sealed for 1000 years. Of course, I wouldn't be suprised if somewhere in the plotline, Bowser makes another attempt to kidnap Princess Peach.
As one last interesting bit for you to feast on. The developers at Intelligent Systems told Famitsu that the flat, styalized graphics that made the original famous will be having a far greater impact on storyline and gameplay this time around, especially regarding puzzles.
Expect a complete write up on this game and plenty of media as soon as E3 comes along in a little over a month now. Wait for it.
