it just really burns me up that the aztecs were unquestionably a more formidable military force than cortes' troops and in basically any situation with a fair fight the aztecs won easily

Their weapons shattered on contact with steel armor
Aztecs also made a lot of enemies with other local groups, which the Spaniards used against them

there was an instance where conquistadors were being seiged in montezuma's palace (after he died, iirc) and they tried to escape but they drowned cause they were lugging too much gold with them
