I think the most important thing to do is to collect a wide variety, not a lot of files at one difficulty. When you have a lot of files you'll gravitate toward the ones that are around your difficulty level, but the beauty is once you get better you already have hard files to try out to help you get even better.

Once you collect a lot of files, make sure to play ones that aren't easy for you. Challenging yourself is the fastest way to improve.

Ty to all of you who didn't try to piss in my cheerios. I got the ITG packs (thanks for that link). Almost all of the ones on "expert" are hard as hell, some are impossible because my up doesn't register if i press both sideways arrows... Know how to fix that? And for some reason the FFR DL page says i don't have permission to use it...

left, up, right triples and down, left, up triples probably aren't registering on whatever setup you're playing. Experiment with your keyboard. Go to options > config key/joy axes or whatever, and try to find a setup that registers quads. Your best bet may be a setup on the numpad.
