How do you make those cool backgrounds?

For example, dantheman's FOTS. How the heck would you make something like that (like with the lettering and fusing the words into the lightning)? I don't know much about how to use photoshop, and I want to be able to make better BG's like dantheman's, or any good simfile maker. The thing I most want to learn is how to make the lettering look cool instead of just some normal font, like how Dragonforce is written FOTS BG.

Any pointers?

Get some brushes, look at some tutorials, and just work in photoshop for a bit.

ask sq3r. he made the fots graphics.

but i know for a fact that he started with a googled image, which is a good place to start. then modify it in photoshop.

Find an image from google orsome desktop wallpaper site, modify it as required in photoshop. The text effects are pretty simple, right click the text layer and go to blending options, then play about with those until you've figured out what they all do, then you'll be making pretty hot graphics fast.
