Re: The Ultimate Simfile FAQ
Yes you will get .sm.old files. They are for backup.
In other words if you saved changes that you didn't want, you could delete the current .sm file, rename the .sm.old to .sm and it will have the file before you saved.
I hear you can get rid of files by deleting them. Also, whenever I make a song, the files within the folder always say .sm.old. I was wondering if it's because I use SM 3.9 to edit my songs...I'm not sure. Tass got pissed when I sent him 2 songs where the files within the folder had .sm.old names. Any idea on how to fix this?YOU JUST WON THE GAME! CONGRATULATIONS!Comment

Re: The Ultimate Simfile FAQ
How to save as a .dwi:
1. Make sure you're done with making the stepfile in StepMania
2. Press "Esc" on your keyboard.
3. Press "Save"
Also for BPM, you don't need to install anything. Just go here
All you have to do is just click anywhere to the beat of the song, then you will get an average BPM in the box.
May this post help you on the "Magical" journey of making sims!

Re: The Ultimate Simfile FAQ
For whoever asked about finding bpm in audacity...
You have a few options to find bpm.
1- download a program that figures it out for you. Some people like it, I personally don't.
2- If you have a good sense for bpm, just guess and modify it till its right. But chances are you won't be able to do that if you're new to this and don't happen to be able to find the tempo of things already (who knows, you could be a music major or something).
3- In audacity, as far as I know, there is no way to actually check the bpm. Personally I just do it the old school way. I play the song and watch the timer. I tap my foot and count out the number of beats in one minute. You probably would need to actually count measures unless you feel like counting to between 100-200, but the idea itself is pretty simple (if you count measures just convert that into beats).
So just pick whatever way seems easiest to you. Its usually easiest to use a program to tell you the bpm when you just start out, so I would suggest MixMeister for that.Comment

Re: The Ultimate Simfile FAQ
What exactly are you asking? Do you want to put a simfile that you got from the Stepmania website into the simfile database? If that's what you want, then you're not allowed to, because they aren't your steps. If that's not what you want... please clarify.
Also, I think you can use Microsoft Word and other text editor programs to create .dwi or .sm files. I tried it once and it looked the same as it did in notepad, and no screw ups in the files or anything. Just go to "Save as..." and Click on the drop-down menu "Save as type:" and choose 'All Files'. Then name your simfile, add .dwi or .sm (doesn't matter, really, Stepmania reads both), and Save! Not too bad, right?
A .dwi or .sm file is, in essence, a plain text file that is read and interpreted specially by the Stepmania program.Have a pad simfile that you're proud of? Send it to:
