do we actually really think about layering, patterning, pitch relevancy and all that shit whenever we truly play files?

hmm. well...most of the time, it's not a conscious decision we make. it's just that we're used to speaking in the language of Stepmania and files that don't take that into consideration feel dissonant as a result

the same holds for any medium in my opinion. we break music down into a bunch of smaller components if we have to, don't we? it's just a part of getting to understanding how something works, and it's pretty rewarding to figure out.

        Re: ODIPack3 Simfile Reviews

moches is right. A file is better when it can be conveyed in a way that is not only understandable visually, but also playable structurally. When I'm playing a file and I'm having trouble understanding the layering combinations/accents for a song that I feel is really good, I have trouble playing it again.

I can almost guarantee that I'm going to enjoy Fission's file for Guile of the Rime King, because he sent it to FFR for judgment and I was very happy with what he did as a whole -- the file fits the song very nicely on a structural level and it's visually attractive because it accents things appropriately in a way that the player will understand.

I've also decided that I'm gonna wait until my Ultra X is usable before downloading this pack, because I'm going to shit all over it on SM once I can actually play with a good keyboard (still waiting for my PS/2 -> USB converter, lol).

no time and motivation to sit down to write reviews but from whatever random ass files I partially played through yesterday within the hour they were good

I just hope that this pack doesn't slingshot SM mentality back in the wrong direction though

About the ending of Requien for a Team, there's literally nothing left after it. I didn't cut off the ending or anything, that's just how the Jimmy S ended the song lol
Wooly Mammoth Stomp is also the full song btw. I remember someone saying he wanted to see a longer stepfile of it but that's all (folks!)

I'll use cooking as an example

you don't need to be a world-class chef to know what tastes good and what good food should be, and anyone can make delicious food. but there will always be a group of people that will study food and take their cooking a bit more seriously in order to understand what they are doing and do it the best that they can. just because a great chef can make "pretentious" food, doesn't necessarily make them a douche. the reason why they are great chefs is because they understand food

this is a great example because I find a lot of fancy recipes really gross. this is very similar to my simfile preferences (I love dump files, much like I love mcdonalds rofl)

I'm going to go make a DNB file with hand gluts everywhere. Oh, I should make sure I put lots of really hard anchors when there is no note that is being repeated. I have to make sure I don't forget the ascending roll patterns to what should be trills, because that is great pitch relevancy and makes me feel like I am playing the song.
