Stepmania all the sudden lagging.

Serious lag, as in, when I hit a key, it registers a quarter of a second later. This causes boos and all sorts of other crap.

And the confusing part is, it's all of the sudden. I'm playing stepmania, and my sister takes the computer from me to get her college schedule. 5 minutes later, I start stepmania back up and it's horrible lag.

What should I do? I tried setting the priority higher and that just made it worse.

Restart computer make sure nothing else is running in the background.

If not your out of luck. This happened to me a while ago. My sister goes online and **** probably does something wrong, then when I try to play it lags every second like mad. Didn't stop until I wiped the computer of all files and reinstalled firmware.

Try clearing your catch and/or defragging. helps me out sometimes.

Setting the BG brightness to 0% helps with lag greatly, try that.

Many solutions to this problem.

1.Disk Cleanup (Remove programs you don't use anymore, disk cleanup, a good program for disk cleanup would be ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ ).
2.Disk Defrag ( Use the systems defrag program or download this useful alternative http://www.defraggler.com/ ).
3.Viruses? ( Run a virus scan on your system with your anti virus software or if you don't have any download spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html ).
4.StepMania Settings ( Find StepMania tools in your stepmania program folder and go into game settings and adjust the Graphic and Sound API, I recommend having sound set to wave out but mostly all the options work great on Graphics API ).
5.Nothing? ( I'm pretty sure your sister must have run a program that is probably running in the background hidden, restarting computer helps, check on your system tray and exit programs that are not needed and close all windows that are not needed while playing, it should improve system speed. Also if your sister uses programs like limewire for an example, exiting that out increases internet speed for online if you plan to play online ).

Thanks. I'm pretty sure my sister ran something she wasn't supposed too. She doesn't own up to anything because she is the "perfect child". Like once her computer was "magically" cracked down the monitor. My parents bought her a new one because it wasn't her fault. <.<

I asked her if she did anything but she said she didn't. I think she is lying though.

Also I already use ccleaner everyday, and I can't defrag this computer because it's my mom's.
