Make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card as well. StepMania depends on your sound card drivers not only for audio output but also for song syncing.
None of my systems have had any problem with the files that you mentioned, and they're all over the radar (P4 with a SBLive, Compaq Presario 2140US laptop with an Conexant AMC Audio chipset, and whatever Apple put in their QuickSilver PowerMac G4s).
