    Switching to 4 fingers

I currently play on index fingers, and want to get better, so I'm switching to 4 fingers.

I have a few questions here. Is there anyone here that went from indexes to 4 fingers? How did you do it? I've tried alot of today and pretty much can't do shit.

Are their any certain songs, I could practice with, or any advice you guys could give?

    RE: Switching to 4 fingers

switch to 4 fingers is like practically relearning the game. you'll probably have to go back to doing 8 or 9 footers for awhile and get your 8th notes down before you can hit 16ths again. it'll take time to get good, but if you want to be the best, 4 fingers is the way to go. i peronsally play both ways, and i'm still better with indexes. if you want to change, FORCE yourself not to use indexes, and don't be afraid to fail a song or two.

    and practice!

I'm trying to do the opposite as Gamepro... it's pretty hard changing styles.

          RE: Switching to 4 fingers

Indexing for me is impossible. Just playing the first section of Arch's file for learning indexes confused me massively. It doesn't seem logical the way he explained it.

Anyway, once you find a 4-finger setup you're comfortable with, you have to practice the hard stuff. For me, it's "trills" (I believe that's what people call a 4242424242 pattern) as that's one of the main flaws in the 4-finger setup vs the indexes. Instead of using your two strongest fingers of all 10, you have to resort to the weaker middle (or whatever your setup is) combined with your index. The timing gets off fast and it's hard to keep it up for long periods of time.

But, the good thing is, 16th streams become much easier so long as the notes are in a nice pattern, such as 4286 or 6824 (favorites). It's basically like drumming your fingers; just roll it from left to right or vice versa and watch it go.

I think I'll make a 4-finger learning simfile similar to Arch's. Look forward to it.

Edit - I got your trills right here Tass!

Erm... what is the difference between "4-fingers" and "indexing"? :O
Actually... could anyone explain the whole thing? :P

Think of it in terms of fingers...

4-fingers is FOUR fingers. You have on finger per arrow.

Indexing is the use of only your two index fingers. It's hard, but it's supposed to mimic DDR in a sense. I don't know..

One handed is playing with just one of your two hands. Generally, it means 3-fingered, one handed.

Alright thanks, that cleared things up.

I'm playing with 1 hand right now and I'm actually pretty good, but I want to be better. I've completed some difficult songs like Mindblowin' and Quasar with 1 hand, but I wanna be able to complete even harder ones so I think I'll switch to 4-fingers since it seems alot easier.
