The way it is programmed. Open up a dwi file and then a sm file and you will see the setup is different. There may be other features one file features over another, but I'm content enough programming in dwi, so I never really pay attention.
In dwi programming, a sample would go like this: #SINGLE:MANIAC:8:0000000080206040802......
2=down, 4=left, 6=right and 8=up; 0=no arrow Each figure representing an 1/8 of a beat.
But if I remember correctly, sm is something like this:
0000
0000
0000
0010
0000
0100
0000
0001.....
Where the four number across represent the arrows, i.e. a "1" in the first position is left, etc.
If I'm wrong or if you know more about sm or its features, someone feel free to add or correct me.

No you got the number coding right for sm.
Dwi's goes like:
00010010
10101010
or something close to it.
Sm has a much easier step file maker.
While DWI has a seperate maker called X Step for novice step makers.
Sm has some songs.
DWI has alot of songs.
Sm has extra settings that DWI doesn't.
However Sm needs to be run on different settings(ie: video card)
DWI somewhat doesn't run as high.
There's alot of differences, but i think more people would answer this one alot better than me. Or have more differences, either way is good enough.Comment
