so, I reinstalled Windows 8.1 on my laptop so I can get back into making music, but also to play stepmania. of course, on a fresh install, I got the dx3_dx9.dll missing error. I googled the error so I could find the end-user runtime installer for DirectX 9...
but it turns out that a shit ton of links on the microsoft website now redirect, unabashedly, to the Windows 10 Upgrade page. obviously this is some straight up bullshit, so I did some more hunting.

hopefully staiain's performance at agdq actually breathes some life into the community, so I'm making this post for the inevitable "dx3_dx9.dll" errors we'll get due to new players.
