    Locating Functional Copy of SM

So, I've been trying to locate a functional copy of SM. I've heard rumors that the later versions are corrupt or undownloadable and such. I've tried searching for the missing .dll file. I've tried updating windows - updating flash - updating browsers - updating installers, etc. I've gotten a new security program, and I've even reset this PC back to factory settings. Nothing has worked.
Can someone link me to a working copy of SM or explain how/why it doesn't?

I looks like all you are missing is a .dll file, which means you should update the directx9 library here.

    Hopefully this works for you.

    EDIT: formatting

THIS IS IMPORTANT. Use the link I gave and update it from microsoft. Don't use a .dll website

Try doing it completely fresh, but a different location. Delete everything, redownload from here: http://www.stepmania.com/download/ and install into a folder like C:/Documents/Stepmania 5

install sm as admin, put it somewhere that isn't "Program Files"
install dx9 as admin, although this shouldn't matter since it's a microsoft installer

Use this, this is the proper updater which will install all of the runtimes for DX9 (What stepmania uses). It shouldn't ask you where to install it.

                    stepmania .com /faq/

[Windows] "The program can't start because d3dx9_43.dll is missing from your computer."

Install DirectX9, available from Microsoft here: microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35.
