is there a way to make adding songs super easy and instant like osu where you can just drag and drop instead of going in sm folder and having to reload the entire game?

or is that just dreamin' haha

I dream of having a stepmania version which is compatible with both 3.95 and 5's negative bpm and other lua sheningans

i dream of making a arcade theme for it and put it inside all ITGs

There will be a browser right in the game and it doesn't need to restart or anything.

Also yes, that's totally possible. It also won't be happening soon.

Uh. You can do all that stuff, with a little work. 3.95 stuff shouldn't even exist. That build was never supported officially to any capacity.

The negative stop/bpm stuff gets converted to warps (as they should) these days and works great. Lua shenanigans are entirely possible, too, you just actually use a Lua file instead of an XML file now. It'd be super easy to convert some of the old stuff, but nobody has done so.

            sounds freakin' rad.

shakesoda, could you explain a little bit about the current dev team's goals and vision for the game?

            - with an integrated song database, what will the legal policy be like?
            - how large of an audience are you looking to reach, in the long term?
            - do you plan to collaborate with stepmaniaonline.net? or would there be a separate, "official" multiplayer community?
            - what is (or will be) the primary purpose of SM Micro?

As with the old SM Share, we won't filter content but reported content will be removed if we get DMCA notices. As long as we honor takedown notices we're in no legal danger.

              - how large of an audience are you looking to reach, in the long term?
As big as possible. Another idea that has come up is talking with Valve to release a version w/workshop support on Steam... but we'd probably need to go through greenlight and get some more (decent) default content, and polish up the interface to actually resemble a game made this decade (like Osu's).

I'd honestly be down with having a Kickstarter or something, but I'd have to make plans more concrete and I honestly doubt it'd go well.

              - do you plan to collaborate with stepmaniaonline.net? or would there be a separate, "official" multiplayer community?
I would like to host an SMO server on stepmania.com and have better lobbies/matching in general... eventually. For now, working with smo.net on things sounds great.

              - what is (or will be) the primary purpose of SM Micro?
It will support 100% of the content in the song database and is also a pilot for a new simfile format. It's not supposed to replace the full game, but it should be good enough that you could use it as the main way to play simfiles if you really wanted... kind of like how a lot of people just go listen to music on youtube instead of keeping their own library.

It'll support controllers and stuff and probably local multiplayer, too.

                fantastic. thank you!

a much more vague, brainstorm-y question: what can we (the StepMania community at FFR) do to help?

So what about uploading packs of files then? I assume the songs database will mostly focus on singles but what if we want to upload an entire pack in the database? Is there any plans for that in the future?

It's structured to both store and build packs. I'm building it so any packs uploaded will be available both as a whole and as individual songs, and any songs uploaded can be built into packs. I've found it really obnoxious that no simfile DB has ever treated them properly.

I've only got the groundwork for this done, though, so don't expect it to be ready soon.

People with some CSS/HTML/PHP skills can poke around at https://github.com/shakesoda/stepmania-site. Everyone else can keep these reports coming and generally just use the hell out of the site.

Any kind of tutorial posts would be welcome, content like that can be added to the wiki by anyone with access (regular users can't touch the wiki because of how unbelievably bad the spam on the old one was). Actually, any suggestions for wiki content and things that need documentation would be awesome.

The site also needs more icons, smilies, etc.

I'm just wondering because it's something I've been wanting for quite a while (and I'm sure many people would love it as well).

Don't really care how long it takes as long as the end result is good, so for now get hype :V

I'll shoot some PMs/IMs and see who might be available to help with the new site code. (can someone give me a rundown of how to properly utilize Git and GitHub? that's the most intimidating thing for me personally, lol.)

as for easy simfiles/notecharts: sounds lovely.

what's tough in terms of making those simfiles, I think, is knowing the audience. do we cater to one style, or a few styles, or have one-size-fits-all notecharts? in my opinion, even "easy" charts for pad and keyboard should be very different from each other. not to mention, there's 4-panel, 8-panel, PIU, 4-key spread, 4-key index, 6-key, etc.

                          what approach should be taken?

I would say that having files separated between keyboard and pad files would be a good idea, similar to how ZiV does.
