    My Stepmania feature Christmas List

note: I have no idea if any of these features are possible.

    1. 10-key mode; 9 key mode; 8 key mode; a 5 key mode that isn't Pump. Basically you could go as low as 3 and as high as 10 and it would all be in the same "mode".

    3. Changing between modes at the song select screen. I hate having to go to "game mode" to change between kb7 and 4-key. It would be ... so amazing if I could just select "mode" like I do "difficulty."

    3. The ability to drag and drop, as well as copy and paste, entire sections of columns in the editor.

    4. The ability to copy/paste sections of columns across a Stepmania window, in case I want to open two editors to transfer one pattern to another file.

    5. Finger-specific designation in your setups, so that the noteskin knows what's a thumb and what's a finger and updates the notechart accordingly. Say I want to have an 8-key notechart with Q+W+E+V+B+I+O+P -- two thumbs, but atm there isn't a notechart to support that.

    6. Saving setups and switching between them at the song select screen. Right now I alternate between 1-hand (left hand, Q+W+E+V), 1-hand (right hand, V+I+O+P), solo (1+2+3+8+9+0), and kb7 (1+2+3+space+8+9+0). It's a bitch. I need two Stepmanias to do it.

    7. Isolation mode. This would allow you to chop off entire columns of a song and just play those columns. So, say, I want to do just the left hand part of a solo chart -- I chop off the last 3 columns.

    8. Chordstream mode. This would just take a 4-key chart (or a 5-key chart), shift all of it to the right hand (B+I+O+P), and mirror it for the left hand (Q+W+E+V). If you want to play 10-key, you could do this with pump charts/Beatmania charts.

    9. Smart autogen, where notes are shifted around to fill empty spaces and extraneous jack notes are removed.

    10. Smart practice. So, say there's a part of a song I want to practice for 2 minutes on repeat and be graded on it. I go into the editor, select that part, pick "practice" and then select for how long / how many repetitions.

the sm5 editor is massively hated by almost everyone that has worked with the code of it, and people are working on a new external editor because the source code of sm5 is just such a mess it would be easier to rewrite stepmania than edit it.

dunno if anyone is interested in actually adding this because is it necessary??

like the 5key mode in IIDX when you play a 7key chart?

dance 4key double which is 8key's does have its own separate chart for all 8keys so you could make charts for it.

all dat chart reading to do that, in before more complaints about SM5 TAKES SO LONG TO START.

so here's my problem with these

assuming we want to develop stepmania to cater to keyboard players, this would make a lot of sense and would be great to have

but stepmania is supposed to be a ddr simulator

there's been a ton of drama and shit thrown everywhere in the past couple of years because keyboard players won't stop bitching for stepmania to do something it wasn't meant to do

it's true that we have no better alternative at the moment but i'm just sayin

it has been said by multiple people that have worked on sm many times that stepmania is more than just a fucking ddr simulator, pre sm 3 is ddr, after 3 you got fucking ParaParaParadise, Pump It Up, and even Beatmania IIDX and 7Key which is basicly o2jam, so also button games which you dont use your god damn feet for, so everytime I see a person say its a ddr simulator I think he is a closed minded bastard.

so STFU stargroup with your inaccurate bs.

Re: My Stepmania feature Christmas List

jesus christ Jousway, why did you have to respond like that?

stargroup's post is FAR from inaccurate, but the way he worded it isn't right. The keyboard community is incredibly small, and those who play the other types of games that are contained with SM are so incredibly few and far between. The fact of the matter is it's a "dance game simulator", and many people who use the editors use it for pad-based creations.

There are exceptions to this rule, but this problem has been an issue with integrating communities for a long time now; the difference between the community over here and the SM community located on the SM forums (which is quite possibly the largest organized community) is that we've advanced a lot quicker in the utilization of the game and the engine. As SG mentioned:

there's been a ton of drama and shit thrown everywhere in the past couple of years because keyboard players won't stop bitching for stepmania to do something it wasn't meant to do
                  Precisely this.

there are korean keyboard players, japanese keyboard players, and even communities with piu keyboard players, even on otakusdream there are 4key keyboard players but they arnt active like hell, I hang around a load of places cuz I had a load of free time, since 3 months ago that changed, but really there are a shit load of keyboard players, its just non of them post on forums and stuff, like if you look alone at the download count of massive packs you will see its insane, even with solo packs.

but yeah if you consider the "keyboard community" to be people at FFR that talk about it and show up actively then yes, its small.

the stepmania.com forum is dead like hell, 99% of the members there are just new people that want help with problems or want to know where to find songs, if you look at the most posted topic names you'll see its "help", while here on FFR the talk about stepmania is more active than on stepmania.com, like for example archowls thread, he made a post about "the future of stepmania" and instantly the thread takes attention, on stepmania.com when a person asks for help it takes atleast 6 hours till he gets an answer, and usally its just from 1 guy, MaxX, its just dead.

if you compare the "active" amount of stepmania players or retired stepmania players that still use this forum, compared to the amount on stepmania.com, believe me, there are more people here.

                        also about the
"keyboard players won't stop bitching for stepmania to do something it wasn't meant to do"
the dev team have been reading this forum for a long long time, like you have prob seen midiman, shakesoda or freem pop up on this forum now and then, because they do care about the keyboard side and we do listen to your requests, like 7key was added because people wanted to play o2jam on stepmania, so it got added, for keyboard players, so saying stepmania isn't doing something because it wasn't meant to do it, is just silly
