Whats funny is open-itg (based off 3.95) is way faster (loads faster, 3-5x the FPS) and WAY WAY WAY more stable than stepmania 5 is for me on linux. So I wouldn't refer to it as the 'broken version.'

OpenITG also fixes a lot of the bugs in vanilla 3.95 and is still in development (?), as opposed to vanilla 3.95, which was abandoned for 4.0 a very long time ago and it was left with a shitload of bugs that nobody except Roxor and the OpenITG team have ever bothered to fix since then, iirc. And concerning this:

at this point using vanilla 3.95 isn't like using Windows XP, it's like using Windows ME.

(Side-note: I'd love to know how you got OpenITG on linux, I've been trying to build it from source but I kind of hit a brick wall at "error while loading shared libraries: libvorbisfile.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory".)

sm lua isnt that hard compared to other things, if you get the hang of it, its quite easy, unless you're some ****ing retarded that still thinks 3.95 is best ver while every facts point that its the worst sm ver ever.

If you have 3.95 setup just how you like with noteskins/themes that do not work with sm5 then I can see lots of reasons to still use 3.95. If they made themes/noteskins have backwards compatibility then I think more people probably would have upgraded.

Also openitg (based off 3.95) is the only stable stepmania on linux. sm5 (binaries on the site or building from source) is extremely crash/unstable. I can never select songs (if playing online) because it will always crash in the song selection screen.

Also why is it that openitg can get 900-1400 fps and then sm5 gets like 120-140?

Well 3.95 may have bugs but the fact that you claim it's the least stable version can be debated, I've had 5.0 and 3.9 crash more often than 3.95 that's one of the reasons I'm sticking with it, but what's the true reason is with no doubt the fact that sm 5.0 keeps frameskipping so arrows become choppy.
If i had an ancient PC i wouldn't have anything to say but my box is more than enough to run stuff like crysis on max. For me, sm 3.95 runs just as smooth as it would've with vsync turned on, but 5.0 is choppy no matter what I do.

And Jousway, that you want to bring stepmania further is good and well BUT, at this point it seems you care about anything BUT gameplay, while focusing on flashy theme animations, noteskins etc, the in-game of 5.0 still dosen't run flawless, which IMO should be first priority of a game like this and the reason many don't wanna move on from 3.95.

themes on sm 3.9 are terribly convoluted and bad for fps, why do you think all of the top players use the default theme or some kind of personal theme that strips out unneeded graphics

This does not happen to me AT ALL, and it never has on any of the three distros that I've used SM5 on (Ubuntu, Mint or Arch). Care to post a crash log? I think it ends up in /tmp/crashinfo.txt.

Also why is it that people care about framerates that go way over the refresh rate of their monitors? All that means is that there are a bunch of frames that you won't see.

There are now song backgrounds on the song pages. Unfortunately we still can't distinguish files of the same name so the background is most likely going to just be the most popular version of the file.
