    Re: Questions for stepartists

I think I step too much video game music.
    Too ****ing much.
And sometimes t+pazolite or dnb pops out of nowhere.

That's not a true depiction of what I'm listening all the time but that's just the song I find good to step for my style.

who has influenced your stepping style and why?

I don't have many influences...but Patashu and IcyWorld would probably be my main two.

What kind of songs do you seem to find yourself stepping the most? Has the type of song changed over the years?

        Let's see...in my spare time, I'd step:
        - Progressive Metal
        - Breakcore
        - J-Core
        - Something I Made in about 12 Hours (I'm still trying my hand at Music Producing)
        - And anything else that I like enough, that I find it step-worthy.

Mostly I step chiptunes and various metal genres (especially power metal and VG metal) but in general I'm open to stepping anything someone throws at me.
At first I tended to step exclusively electronic music because I was terrible at syncing- just look at Improvisation et Chien haha

Ever since I got used to DDReam I've been stepping a lot more live music.

who has influenced your stepping style and why?

I know who made me interested in the game, but I know only one user on this whole site who made me want to step songs the way I do: this user is Rebirth0, and he influenced me more than I could imagine before writing this post. I'm not talking about the SSH rock songs he did, I'm talking about The Games We Played. Seriously, mate, that managed to give me a nerdgasm and an arrowgasm at the same time, and that's pretty much what I try to do every time I step a new song. I especially liked the layering, which was dense, but at the same time incredibly simple. That's also one of the things I really seek to deliver in simfiles.

Oh and I almost forgot; Carlos for urging me to use DDReam (sorry bro, close call)

would you say you have your own style?

I think I do. People should've figured by now I either like very technical and precise music (piano music, most of the time) or really silly tunes. In any case, I really am in favor of simpler layerings in simfiles and that heavily influences my song choice and my pattern choice. I like to see it as if I was stepping for pad just with more detail: some charts in the DDR arcade machine have such light layering yet are so engrossing, it's insane. When they use jumps, you can feel why it's there. When it's hands, holy shit, you feel it as well. That's one of my favorite styles and that's what I'm pursuing.

I guess I should also add; because I invert the up and down arrow when I play spread (my left hand does left-up and right hand does down-right), it is really important for me to have a balance between one-handed and two-handed patterns for it to be playable by as much people as possible (the only file I couldn't do that 100% was Mortal Kombat Metal Menu), since I often have problems with files that only have one-handed patterns for me.

how much has your stepping/style evolved since you started?

I guess I could show a video instead of trying to explain; the change has been pretty radical. Notice how the personality behind it (what I was talking about when it came to style) stays somewhat the same:

            To

ps I'd really like people to find this post interesting that would be awesome

very interesting philosophy, Mario. most people would try to pack as much into a file as possible (I admit I'm guilty of this from time to time) but simple, well-chosen patterns can be just as expressive if utilized effectively.

                Re: Questions for stepartists

who has influenced your stepping style and why?
Who: Simartists that make files that I enjoy (Cetaka, Patashu, Jimerax, Rebirth, Yesssss)
Why: I never get tired of the songs stepped by these simartists, and I want to make files that people want to play more than once. I listen to music that I can listen to more than once and appreciate it for something different each time I hear it; I perceive simfiles the same way.

if you just started stepping who do you look up to?
I'm not new; I just don't make many files. For new people I do strongly suggest they look at Kommisar and Gundam-Dude files, because they are very prolific and do a great job campaigning for the growth of the SimfileIndustry™ even to this day.

                for the vet stepartists
would you say you have your own style?
No. I don't make enough files for someone to say "Hey that's a Yotipo file". Plus I rarely release files I make. I'm more perceptive than I am creative.

how much has your stepping/style evolved since you started?
What I choose to step is very spontaneous, but for the most part I've always valued enjoyability over ingenuity. However over time, I've become more consistent.

who has influenced your stepping style and why?
fysx, yesssss, zagh, HST. i just had tons of fun playing their files honestly rofl. smart sacrifices to technicality to ramp up fun factor oh lord <3 but they never overdid things on their serious files; it was usually a nice balance between hard gay and simple fun. when i started to get somewhat decent at solo, i found that i was whoring these guys' files a ton. basically, they had great chords and streams in all the right places and i wanted to incorporate that in all of my files.

would you say you have your own style?
no lol. i just use common StEpPiNg KnOwLeDgE to make shit fun.

how much has your stepping/style evolved since you started?
freezes, color theory, friendlier patterns, brackets are awesome in moderation, climax derps. pretty much the more i played solo, the more i understood how to step it.

What kind of songs do you seem to find yourself stepping the most? Has the type of song changed over the years?
mostly vgm lol. hasn't really changed either.

I haven't stepped a chart in ages.. but, I like to think I have my own style. When I was making simfiles there wasn't really a whole lot to be influenced by, I just wanted to make fun to play charts that were fairly accurate.

As for evolution a ton.. using triples/quads is one thing, being far more accurate to the song, such as not putting in steps where there isn't anything going on (BMR style ftw), ah that's really about it.

When I started getting into the swing of things, I was stepping drum and bass. It's the easiest style to step if you have a good feel for what patterns are smooth, and at the time, I had a good foundation for pattern usage. After my FFR chart for Tageri (which I now find obsolete) got in game, I kept trying to play with all sorts of DNB like Nosrac, The Flashbulb, and Venetian Snares, with no real success.

After honing in on a style that combines direct layering and accenting, I started getting drawn into movie soundtracks (orchestral scores). Manny to the Rescue ended up being my first accepted submission to a keyboard pack (CKMP 4) - it was received moderately well, but enough for me to be satisfied. Now, I'm always looking for some sort of orchestral composition to be stepped, whether it be from Newgrounds (and trust me, Newgrounds knows how to make some pretty goddamn intense music in this genre.) or various movies with famous composers (Hans Zimmer, John Powell, David Newman, etc).
