Any favorite file I would nominate would be from probably at least 5 years ago. I just haven't played that much of the newer stuff for various reasons. That and the fact that I know I liked files that were not always universally popular, see anything with mines/mines added well before their current popularity really hurts any file that I played a lot.
Loved aperson's Maximizer and Innocent v2, but I highly doubt anyone would ever think to nominate either of those.
all in all, this whole thread just demonstrates the generational gap between everyone, rofl. people prefer the generation/era of simfiles they grew up with, with exception to those that can find appreciation towards modern day simfile making
I have a large preference toward modern and today's files. And I play stepmania since winter 2007.
I perfected my skills with ODIpacks and SMGpacks. I am the 99 percent.

I appreciate modern sims but they haven't aged like a fine wine has imo. Give it 5 or so years and when people are still posting scores from stuff from today's packs, then there's your indication on how good the file is. It seems silly because there are lots of really good files from 5+ years ago that were great but nobody seems to play them anymore: IamMe's Vunderbar, Laggy's Cross Time, RaiRai's Mr.12000 is Sad, Zaghurim's Electric Heart, Kil's Emelia Finale. It seems mostly really difficult or really simple but catchy songs stick around, regardless of how well they were stepped.

I had Innocent V2 a while ago but now it's gone
I don't think what's popular on the scoreboards is necessarily representative of the best files: let's not forget that plenty of midare pack files are there, too. What you see as being the best file really depends on what your criteria is.
Catchy songs do stick around, though. That's a really good point actually: plenty of files are really good but are overlooked simply because of their songs. Do you think that a file's song has anything to do with how good the file is? (Not being facetious at all, I'm genuinely curious to hear your thoughts on this)
i still play your old gamepro files rebirth. i have the ultimate simfile pack and i'll occasionally play happy angel? v2, never gets old to me
I love some of my old files but I have no idea why I put random minijacks in there whenever jumps come up. That is a terrible way to do it, but yes I also think Happy Angel v2 is fun as hell still

Yes yes yes 100%. A person's taste in music will have an affect on how they value the simfile for sure. I don't fancy japanime sims for this reason I think =(
Return of Salieri, Salieri Strikes Back, and Wind God Girl are three sims I play -a lot-.

ps. thanks for the reply, Dynam0! part of me agrees with that, but another part of me thinks that really good files can transcend the music and enhance it to some degree: for example, something like the Automodellista OST is something that I wouldn't have enjoyed listening to in my own time, but after playing files like Cruisin' and In The Light, I developed a bit of an appreciation for the actual song itself. same goes for the many many many anime files out there: I know more about anime than most of my friends despite never having watched a single episode of anything. thanks, Stepmania!
