At any rate, if it is just a server that you are connecting to with no page it is basically going back to smlan. It is hardly even smo. It is obvious which is going to be more popular.
that's a really good point. I never made that distinction myself.
You aren't going to have a popular smo server if you don't even display stats on a webpage or ever plan to.
Pretty much. At least x-treme's server (what I was using before SMO's return) has an actual user stats page with total arrows hit of various accuracy, how many games you've played, most played files, let you check others stats, and had some sort of leader-board to look at.
SMO has an actual website, a leveling system, an experience leader-board, and a full record every song you've played (and your DP / accuracy / grade). It also has an actual forum, a list of rooms online, creates scoreboard pages for files multiple people have played, and has a live view of the room's chat with songs that have been played (so you can know ahead of time the skill level of players and if they have similar packs as you). Plus it's actually called stepmaniaonline.net, which will probably get it more members in it's own right due to it's prior popularity.
So far I've seen more activity on SMO than in ANY server I've ever connected to to play (I've already been in a room with 5 other people, which to me is CRAZY). What more is there to say? Oh yeah, and from now on I'll be playing SMO there, so feel free to hop in my room and play a few songs when I'm online!

Thu[02:03:14]am <Jousway> "The original developers have entirely stopped working on it and handed it over to open development."
Thu[02:03:16]am <Jousway> NICE BS
Thu[02:03:31]am <~freem> actually yeah, that's what happened
Thu[02:03:37]am <~freem> you don't see cnlohr or axlecrusher contributing
Thu[02:03:47]am <~freem> at least that's what I assume he meant
Thu[02:03:50]am <~freem> and not the smo.eu crew
Thu[02:04:16]am <Jousway> the guy that did the original smo, disapeared, and that software disapeared, then there was dutch_com who brought smo back but with it was a rewrite in python, and from what I know the new opensmo is also a rewrite
Thu[02:04:30]am <~freem> yes
Thu[02:04:37]am <Jousway> so saying
Thu[02:04:46]am <Jousway> "and handed it over to open development."
Thu[02:04:48]am <Jousway> its retarded
Thu[02:04:51]am <Jousway> because its a rewrite
Thu[02:04:58]am <Jousway> it has nothing from the original software
Thu[02:05:01]am <Jousway> get yo facts right son
Thu[02:05:34]am <Jousway> but then again, FFR people always have said stuff based on actual facts right
Thu[02:05:35]am <Jousway> OH WAIT
Thu[02:05:37]am <Jousway> THEY DONT
It is a blog about me. Not a website about something else named after me. And yes, charles and axelcrusher have stopped development on smo. Maybe they didn't "hand it over" in the sense that that people couldn't have worked on it prior to that, but when they stopped it was just left up in the air for someone to come continue working on it.
But don't take this out on me. Your problem is with smo.net.
