I've decided to not wreck my brain trying to get libmpg123 working in place of libmad for the time being.
The result of this? StepMania 5 Tournament Edition pre001 is now available.

Please only use this program if you are familiar with StepMania, as this version of the game does not hold your hand.

I would like bug reports and feedback, especially as it pertains to the gameplay. Place all such comments/bug reports in this thread, as I don't want them cluttering up the official StepMania 5 bugtracker.

I really think the in-game should be a bit less flashy and more minimalistic like this also, the big flashy combo and judgement is okay for playtesting and such but when songs are hard it's distracting







footer and header should be as flat as possible without fields sticking up (like I did with the footer and header i just cropped it. And combo dosen't need a label or there should be an option to turn it off

Pretty much what Staiain said. But in the final version, I'll edit stuff to my liking anyway, haha.

Aside from that, the gameplay runs pretty smooth even on my crappy computer, which I didn't expect so thumbs up for that.
It just runs a bit slow overall, but I guess you guys will take care of that in the future

I am going to suggest the use of this:

until the next release.

Place it in Themes/sm5te/Graphics/ScreenGameplay ScoreFrame/ and name it "_full.png".

I'll look into the other issues (combo, etc.) for the next version as well.

edit:
if you play with the score frames only, use this graphic:

put it in the same folder as the other one, only name this one "_scores.png"

I have to say, at first i was sceptical about the theme, but after a while i found it pretty lovely, my only complaint is about the menu song, that is way too repetitive.

Also, some extravagant requests:

-ability to play files at Xrates online, and force some options to the others players
-abilty to create courses at the moment of playing, and also for online, the others players only need to have the songs, not the course.
-support for a kind of friend list, and filter the ranking of each song for "all players" to "friends"
-tournament mode, with a number of predefined players, it create some rounds around them and the winners have to play to the next round, this can be held offline, in a single computer, and online, in online mode, the rounds can be held simultaneously in order to make it faster.

with online being overhauled, this is likely. The new online structure won't be the same as the old SMO protocol, so things like Xrates can be supported.

That first one has been a feature request in normal SM5... not sure when I'll get around to it. It shouldn't be too hard to send course files over the network (and there's no real worry about copyrights), so I will look into that.

it'd be pretty silly to not have this in a build called StepMania 5 Tournament Edition...

I just want to make sure that everyone is happy with the gameplay, scoring, life, etc. before I start implementing some of the bigger features. So if any of you have issues with those areas, let me know.

I will probably release a new build next week.

(and yes, you will be able to edit your CustomSpeedMods within the game in the next version; I just need to code it.)

I'm making some of my future plans known (along with cataloging previous requests) here. Hopefully it'll answer some of the questions people have. If not, you can ask in this thread and I'll try to respond to it.

Is this an addon to existing sm5 builds or just a version of sm5 by itself?

nah, it's the same as before; cmods won't disqualify on songs without (significant) BPM changes.

Be careful with this, especially with piano files, just download my Native Faith file from FFRCP Spring and you'll now what I'm talking about. It has huge bpm changes, but it's not a c-mod file, is done that way only to sync the song with the piano but nothing more

this is its own version of sm5; the source code has been modified.

and this is why I asked the public about it before making any final judgment on the disqualification of c-mods.

I think it should be allowed to use C-mods on any song, and that the files that is made with bpm gimmicks should manually have added an extra scoreboard for X-mod scores
