Haven't played DDR at arcade yet.

How should I start without embarrasing myself for a dollar? And what is your thoughts on the bar?

    1) Start on Light. Stay on that until you're comfortable with the game and don't find yourself making jerking motions to get arrows down. Progress to Standard and Heavy as you see fit.

    2) Don't rape the bar in the beginning. You'll come to rely on it far too much. Only use it on the more difficult things where you need to either balance yourself or move incredibly fast.

Don't rape the bar until stamina becomes an issue. Definitely do not rape the bar on easy stuff. It just pisses me off to watch people do that.

Start with a beginner song, see how you do, and then choose whether or not to change a difficulty(double up or double down on the pad in the select song screen to change difficulty).

Use a bar early and I'll slap you. I can understand for if you do a fast song, but you shouldn't be doing them early, and I'd only use a bar for 300BPM+ standard or higher. 8-10 footers only, I'd say. Maybe not even 8.

Make sure you get a home version too. I used a bar at the arcade to get better at reading speeds and reacting in Heavy and then at home, no bar. but that's just me.

But by this time, you may already have played.

Using the bar is cheating in my opinion. If you don't have enough balance to do a song, or the stamina to complete the song, you should work up to it instead of raping the bar. I will admit, I have used the bar before and it is extremely easy. As long as you can read the arrows, you can do any song with the bar without gettina all that tired. I like watching people do songs without the bar, especially on ITG where their arms are flying around and they are almost tripping over themselves. =)

Using the bar may be cheating, but it can be crucial on Legend Road or other ONI courses, and it helps train a lot with reading fast speeds and reacting to them, and being able to move your feet faster without falling, and using the bar requires much less stamina, if you need to save some energy for some crazy last song.

And it looks better than having your arms flailing around to keep yourself up, but if someone shadows you and doesn't use the handbar, you might end up looking worse.

I still don't get how people have difficulty standing upright sometimes though, unless they are tapping the same 2 arrows over and over. I can understand that. But when they need to put they're hands or arms in some strange fashion to keep from falling over...

If you can't read fast speeds without the bar, how are you going to read it with the bar? Your logic doesn't make any sense. Also, I said it is funner to watch someone not use the bar on a crazy song like pandy just becuase of their arms flailing around. I don't think it counts if you rape the bar and pass a song just because you aren't actually putting in all of your own effort. If you become dependent on the bar, you really aren't getting as tired and thus, it isn't your 100% effort. I think passing a harder song feels like more of an accomplishment if you don't use the bar just becuase of the stamina involved in doing so. You may disagree, but that is my opinion.

Er...I said it wrong. The bar just helps you react.
I didn't say it wasn't fun to watch someone not use the bar and flail around. It's just not fun to be that person. I think.
If I throw up after a song, I think I used 100% effort.
