screw soft pad question

I have gamestop soft pad and it has no response at all when i try and play. Though when i look at the controller socket thingy there are 8 metal sticks that are out instead of 9.. is that causing the problem?
And if so, is there anyway to fix it? or do i just have to return it -.-

Return that thing and go for a Red Octane. If your to poor like me go for a 3rd party one they sell at Toy's R Us. It screws up so bad.
